  • Kentucky Romps on Alabama 85-59

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

As was stated by Avery Johnson the crowd was a factor in the quick-hitter runs the Cats put together. The Arena is a solid sellout of 19,395 with predominately Cat fans. At the 10:00 mark of the second the game was play virtually even. At the 7:24 mark of the second half a TV timeout was a prelude to a fantastic Alabama block by Obasohan of a Murray drive.

Alex Poythress is the designated Alabama killer because every time he see that elephant he goes big game hunting. At the 3:36 mark of the second the Cats outscored the Crimson Tide by ten in each half whereby a 76-55 game. Poythress was 7-8 from the field.

Early in the game the Wildcats were getting the lion share of the fifty, fifty balls. Dominique Hawkins made big contribution in the game on both ends of the court. Kentucky takes a huge step towards the finals on Sunday. The final score Kentucky 85, Alabama 59.

Dominique Hawkins said that they look to Alex Poythress and the mature one in the room but to night his bow and arrow impersonation was a pleasant surprise. He did it twice in the game tonight. Asked about the originator of the gesture he said, “Jamal (Murray) started that in the first semester.” Skal Labissiere said he started the Nerf bow and arrow and was shooting it at his teammates. He said - “It hurt a little bit but its all in fun.”

On why the Wildcats are playing so well now Calipari said is isn't until now that he has a healthy team. “At times Dom (Hawkins), Derrick (Willis), and Poythress was out,” Cal said.

The Cats had a 10-point lead 37-27 on the strength of 7 of 10 three point shooting. The Cats shot 54 percent to Alabama's 38 percent. The Wildcat defense was stifling forcing the Bama players to use the chicken-wing to get open. This is the reason Alabama's' Retin Obasohan to spend a good portion of the first half on the bench. He was held to one point. The game plan for Alabama was to try to stay in front of Ulis but it looked like that was UK's game plan to slow their main weapon down.

Alabama's Authur Edwards was shooting the three's from down town in the first half. At the 14:22 mark of the second half Tyler Ulis buried two straight three's from his version of down town running the score to 52-27. This forced The Crimson to call a much needed timeout to try and stem the tide (no pun intended).

Skal said they are looking for Poythress' leadership.
