  • Ten Keys to Victory

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

    1) In game week players and coaches don't get get up in the hoopla and mudslinging. Coach Minter said - "You are spending time on things that do not matter, I want my players to have distain for but respect for them."

    2) Smartly utilize the 'or' guys. 'Or' guy Taylor Wyndham wil be a defensive end and trade off with Bud Dupree who has good quarterback rushing skill. Or he can play down inside because he said he has finally gotten to the size he wants 6-foot-4, 260-pounds.

    * Mike Douglas who can play the 'or' positions of defensive and defensive tackle.
    * Tyler Brause has made huge strides toward being an impact type of player because he can play both the mike and will linebacker positions.

    3) Joker Phillips needs to have success of having some freshmen respond. The coach said - "Some you expect will respond the way you want them to won't and some you don't expect to respond, will. I quit trying to read freshmen."

    4) Get production from the "Wildcat" when he puts him on the field. To date Phillips has created a mystery over who that player will be but he said there definitely will be one. There has been speculation on who that player will be but it won't be the player everybodies been thinking. He doesn't plan to make a decision on using a freshman quarterback for a couple of weeks. Phillips said that if you take the shirt off a player you should be planning to use him a lot. Given that, don't jump me but I don't think the senior is going to ditch all his experieince doing nothing but holding a clipboard all season. So I think the "Wildcat" will be Morgan Newton.

    5) There must be trust between the quarterback and the quarterback coach. Sanders said that last year Max Smith was processing the calls. "You could look into his eyes and see he was thinking," Randy Sanders explained. "This year he knows what he is doing and is able to get on his players when they line up wrong. He couldn't do that last year because it would have hurt his credibility when he wasn't absolutely sure of what he was doing."

    6) Offensive line has to be effective. "I feel good about most of what I've seen on the practice field," Randy Sanders said. "I'm just anxious to see them respond in the game."

    7) Special teams have to perform. For the most part coverage by the kickoff and punt coverage teams was sound. But there's something about playing Florida that causes the punt and kick protection to break down. Their record setting punt blocking specialist Chris Rainey is now in the Pro's. But UK was very anemic in punt return (1.8 yard average) and kickoff return (20.3 per return) needs desperately to improve.

    8) Contain wide receiver DeVante Parker. He has the makings of being a bigtime player having eighteen 2012 receptions and six of those were for touchdwons. University of Kentucky's physical cornerback Martavious Neloms has to play big in this game.

    9) Stop the run and run it effectively. Throughout this series and especially over the last five games, the team that best runs the football wins the football game. The Wildcats cannot allow a rushing performance like U of L's Dominique Brown's last season. One of UK's five running backs needs to have a hot hand for UK to win.

    10) The cornerback kittens need to became big Cats right away. The starters are seniors but when substitions takes place they become very young. Some football enthusiast say they will take talent over experience and it's believed there are some talented backups.

UK PULLS THE UPSET!!! UK 23, LOUSIVILLE 17.

I am not going to jump on you at all. I do, however, not look fondly on this experiment. M. Newton ain't no C. Newton or Tebow in a run formation. If you are right, I hope it works a lot better than I think it will.

So I think the "Wildcat" will be Morgan Newton.

I don't think it will be Newton in the Wildcat. He isn't nearly quick enough. I hope I'm right and that Whitlow is in there if the staff chooses to go Wildcat.

OK, I shouldn't say this but I know who is in the Wildcat. ME!!!!!!

I'm slow, I have terrible hands, grossly out of shape. However, you have to admit we'll have the element of surprise.

You know, in a rain fest it just might work on the artificial turf at PJs. Run between the tackles all day and 10 yard jump passes to the tight ends might be the ticket.

Oh, we'll be well into the locker room before they can even breathe again they'll laugh so hard. Three or four of them may never be able to play football again.

I noticed in the helmet cam thing that he was directing traffic. Took that as a good sign. A QB has to be able to do that and have the players respond positively.

I am sorry but why does everyone think Newton can play QB.
And if he is running the wildcat that is a mistake but hey I have never coached
and never played a down of football and UK is winning the sugar bowl every year also.

If Joker plays Newton as the Wildcat......well I said I'd remain positive so I'll just not comment and hope Joker values winning the most.

Also one thing I just don't understand is why proven SEC Level coaches with NC'ships behind them have no problem playing a true Freshman the very first game of the season(starting them mind you) have no problem doing it, yet we aren't going to make that decision for at least a couple of weeks. Not meant to be negative, but it does perplex me. If a kid has shown he can compete with the best players we have why would we question playing them at all???? Sorry I don't understand and I wonder if it is an excuse to play a Sr because Joker has proven in the past he will play favorites.
