  • Matt Elam Gets Training at Home

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

The injury of the big nose-tackle Melvin Lewis has put a huge premium on the preparation of his replacement Matt Elam an even bigger man in size. The question has been is he still to big. The 6-foot-7, 360-pound big fella has been fighting his weight every since he arrived on the UK campus as a true freshman. When he reported his weight set at the 390-pound range and it was determined his conditioning wouldn't allow him to play more than twenty consecutive quality plays. That number has been get increasingly better and on Saturday against Auburn University he played all but one series in the second half.

The coaching staff said he did some good things and they expect Elam to continue against Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. It goes without saying the big defensive tackle will need to play as big as he is against the Bulldogs.

At the Monday presser Coach Mark Stoops said they may look at playing some mixture of personnel groupings to compensate for the very experienced Bulldogs. Elam said he made a statement that we find is common to a lot of these high school stars when they come into the college football - “Who is the guy that has my job” he said referring to Melvin Lewis? Now he has the job and we will see if the tutoring and mentoring he got from Lewis will pay off.

“I definitely think he's coming along and is excited to go out there and see what he can get done,” said UK center Jon Toth commenting on the challenge facing Matt Elam.

We asked right guard Ramsey Meyers if there was anything they do to help Elam to get better? He said - “Yeah definitely, anytime we go against each other we try to give them the best look we can to get prepared.” Is he ready for the big stage? “I think he'll be good,” Meyers said. “He's been getting a lot of experience and he's strong too. He'll be able to adjust.”

    Notes

What about those cow-bells they will hear in Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field. “We got the cow-bells out there in practice so that's secondary now,” said Jon Toth.

The Mississippi State versus UK series stands at 21-21 with MS the winners of the last six.

Tommy Mainard said that his receiver Garrett Johnson is special.

What makes him stand out? Mainard said - “If you go back and talk about the way he was in the spring and summer, when you walked pass a meeting room there was Garrett with the lights off studying film. He lives football and he's always trying to grab something new. He puts in the work in the weight room and it's paying off.”
The coach said when they saw him in the Friday Night Lights Camp it was just the way he ran, the way he changed directions, and body control.

With Johnson a lot of it is instincts. We asked was it something to when he came out out of the womb? He said they are not laying around. “You've got to go find them.”

Patrick Towles said he wishes he could be around here when Johnson's a senior because he's going to be something to behold.
