  • Is Shannon Dawson the Filter or Towles' Information Overload?

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

As in life's endeavors often time a filter is necessary to achieve maximum success. A vehicles that passes through several hands experiences transmission fluids of varying types. Eventually that transmission is going to need a new filter. Metaphorically speaking that example is comparable to numerous other situations in life.

In the plight of UK quarterback Patrick Towles that aforementioned has been perhaps has been somewhat overdue. The Wildcats offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson made mention of Towles having been under three offensive coordinators/passing coaches – Randy Sanders, Neal Brown, and now Dawson. Dawson spoke to the performance of Towles on Saturday night against Missouri him reaching a comfort level higher than it's been. “I think it was a combination of his side and my side coming together a little bit,” Dawson explained. That comment has more than one implication in not just the throwing of Towles but also making a play with his legs when necessary. Towles threw for 81 percent Saturday as opposed to the roller-coaster ride he had been on. But as is said 'anything it is never as good as it seem or as bad as it appears.'

While playing pitch and catch with Towles he notice something a little different that he should make in the throwing motion. That was getting the ball higher in his release which meant coming more over the top and this resulted in better accuracy.

Along with the the coordinators Towles has had input from the California quarterback guru George Whitfield where he spent a week the summer of 2014. Whitfield has worked with highly successful Pro quarterbacks.

In the past Towles spent a few days at the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisana. This is a camp the Mannings (Peyton, Eli, and daddy Archie) have been running in the summer for several years. Are the highly successful Mannings someone you are going to sponge up knowledge in playing the position? I guess so.

Then there's Donnie Walker the local quarterback guru. Towles has worked with him a lot. Walker is respected to the level that several up and coming high school quarterbacks seek out his mentoring. The Wildcat defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh sought out Walker to mentor his son Legend Brumbaugh who is a a up and coming local quarterback.

No doubt some of this instruction has been productive but in getting it from so many sources it could equate to being counter-productive. Hence the needed a filter. Towles he has already filtered out the social media and there is about two or three people he listens to. However he said he still stays in touch with former Pro wide receiver Chris Collinsworth who was on the sideline Towles' senior year at Fort Thomas Highlands High School.

Towles said he been toying with his throw for a few years but said he doesn't throw the ball like a lot of other quarterbacks. This is obviously a true statement because no two quarterbacks are exactly the same. Towles termed the subtle Dawson tweak “very, very minor” with “major” results.

Perhaps Towles has turned the corner? Dawson thinks so. “He was more comfortable in his own skin for whatever reason.”

So now for throwing instructions Shannon Dawson will be the only voice he hears and the rest of the season will yield some very positive results.

The voices in his head finally stopped and he can now play with confidence? Hope so, as he is one of the keys to unlock that door that has kept the Cats bottled up for so many years.
