Coach Butch Jones is going into his second year at Rocky Top and is in the unenviable position of having to climb the hill with a team that is deep at the skill positions on offense. The bad news for his program is as he says, "We are the only team in the country that has to replace both starting interior lines, both offensively and defensively. We have to replace our entire kicking game."
Where have we heard 'nickel position' on defense? The Wildcat defensive coordinator D. J. Eliot constantly last season talked about the his nickel Blake McClain and how well he performed. In todays offense the evolution of the nickel has come front and center. Jones said - "You can never have enough secondary, especially now, which I spoke about, with the evolution of the nickel as well."
Tennessee's deepest position appears to be at the wide-out positions. he spoke of the early enrollment of freshman Josh Malone. Jones when asked what his plans for Malone were he said - "We expect Josh Malone to continue to develop. Tennessee is the original Wide Receiver U. That's one of the biggest changes in our football team, is the wide receiver position." In addition to Malone others add to that talented position, Jason Croom, Von Pearson, Alton Howard, and Marquez North. Speaking of Croom, he is the receiver the caught a that caught a thirty-five yard touchdown pass against the Wildcats after UK's cornerback Jaleel Hyche had a double-bobble of an interception attempt that landed in the hands of Croom on the fly for the TD.
The Vols have some game changers at the running back position, also. But the rub comes at the quarterback position and offensive line. The quarterback position is presently in flux. Will they be able to get the ball into the hands of the play makers?
