  • Talked to Harrison twins high school principal today

They’ve spent most of the summer on the road impressing coaches such as John Calipari of Kentucky and Mark Turgeon of Maryland along with numerous high school basketball recruiting analysts.

So what did twins Aaron and Andrew Harrison do one night this week after they got back home to Richmond, Texas?

“They were here supporting the girls in their first volleyball game,” said Travis High School principal JJ Kyle.
However, that did not surprise Kyle.

“They are great young men. For as much attention as they get from all sources, they are very polite, very well grounded. They get along with friends here at school,” she said. “They are actually kind of quiet kids. You would expect maybe some big head or entitlement based on their success, but not them. If you were to see them in the lunch room, you could not pick them out other than they are taller than everybody.

“It is amazing, it truly is, how nice they are. I am very proud of both of them. Sometimes when young athletes talk to the media it is not very good, but they have done it so much that they have gotten better and they are never at a loss for words. But they always give credit to their teammates, something I respect. You would expect there might be a lot of jealousy, but not in school. They are good, solid students and good kids.”

They are also exceptional basketball players that could have their pick of any school in the country. Both are in the top 10 of every player ranking. Many consider them the two best guards in the nation.

Travis High School finished 36-4 last season and was undefeated in conference play. The team was ranked third in the final state rankings and eighth nationally because of the twins.

“They draw a lot of attention to our school, which is only six years old,” Kyle said. “But the school takes it in stride. We are all proud of them and want to help showcase them with no irritation or envy.

“Maybe all this is so new to us that we don’t know any better. Last year when we made our run for state, I wish I could have bottled that school spirit and teamwork. It was just electrifying throughout the whole school.”
On the court, both can be more than electrifying. Both are about 6-5 and Andrew plays point guard and Aaron shooting guard. They played for the Houston Defenders on the national circuit this summer and did nothing to hurt their national rankings.

They have Kentucky, Maryland, Baylor and Villanova on their final list of schools. They are expected to make their college choice in October and sign during the early signing period in November. They have family in Baltimore and a former teammate playing at Maryland. However, Calipari seems in perfect position to sign the brothers based on UK’s recent on-court success as well as producing 10 first-round draft picks in the last three years.

“A lot of college coaches have come through our doors, and I am expecting more,” Kyle said. “That’s good for the Harrison twins, but it’s also good for us because they might see another kid that can fit their program while they are here.

“The twins are great with their teammates. They don’t cause any problems. They are good about making up work — they do travel a lot playing basketball — and I don’t know of one time they have asked me for any special consideration. It’s really just one of those things you seldom hear about, or don’t hear enough about. They are great athletes, but they are really good young men, too.”

Thanks, Harlow--I corrected it to 22. No idea, of course, and watch 18 be the right answer lol. Anyway, I appreciate the heads up.
