  • Mike DeCourcy on Karl Towns Jr., Trey Lyles

    By: LARRY VAUGHT

How good could freshman Karl Towns Jr. and Trey Lyles be for Kentucky next season?

Towns has said he thinks the two freshmen could be a “dynamic duo” due to their size and versatility.

Sporting News columnist Mike DeCourcy thinks the 7-0 Towns and 6-9 Lyles can do a lot together for coach John Calipari’s team.

“On offense, Karl is a terrific shooter,” said DeCourcy. “Trey is more of a 15-foot shooter. Karl can play the pick and roll and set the screen and still pop out and make the shot. He is really good at it. I saw him shoot international 3’s in the Olympic prep. If he was able to do that, the college certainly is within his range.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Calipari borrowed some high-low stuff that (Kansas coach) Bill Self runs because both can play in that offense. They can do a lot. They do not have to pop out to the 3-point line. They can shoot from 14 to 16 feet.

“Both guys give you that option and Cal will probably have to use some of that because if you are going to play all those guys some, you have to use them in that way and Cal will know that.”
