  • James Young has all tools to be perfect fit for Calipari

    By: LARRY VAUGHT

Shooting guard James Young openly campaigned for a scholarship offer from Kentucky, something he finally got from UK coach John Calipari. Since then he’s turned in a superb summer after averaging 18.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season for Troy (Mich.) High School when he also sh ot 34.5 percent from 3-point range.

He has a top four of UK, Arizona, Michigan State and Kansas, but often has indicated Kentucky is his top choice based on the team’s success and what Calipari has done putting players into the NBA.

He is a top 10 recruit and an explosive player and scorer. He could play small forward, but shooting guard is his natural position even though some recruiting analysts indicate his ballhandling needs to improve before he gets to college.

“James Young is a great scorer of the basketball,” said Paul Biancardi, ESPN’s national recruiting director. “He does it with a jump shot. He beats you with a pull-up. He gets to the rim and scores.

“What impresses me the most when he is not scoring is that he is a good facilitator and rebounder. He finds way to do other things to stay engaged in the game. He doesn’t look for his shot every time. He tries to find the best shot for his team and keeps the ball moving. Most scorers keep hold of the ball, but he does a great job realizing when he is open and when he is not and when to make a move and when to pass. He is fairly selective with his shot attempts. He’s a good team guy.”

Athletic. Scorer. Passer. Facilitator. Team guy.

Sounds like the kind of attributes Calipari has found in players he’s recruited at Kentucky to win a national title, reach two Final Fours and go to at least the Elite Eight three straight seasons.

Young is expected to make his college choice in the early signing period in November.

Thanks, Harlow--I corrected it to 22. No idea, of course, and watch 18 be the right answer lol. Anyway, I appreciate the heads up.
