  • The Wildcats Three Biggest Trouble Spots Going into Spring Practice

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

The buzz on national signing day around the football team has turned into a slow leak. You would think that Mark Stoops would want to capitalize but for the first time in a long time there was no pre-spring presser. Heck, there wasn’t a spring prospectus facts book to hand out. But for whatever maybe that’s the way Stoops wants it. But we know there are some died-in-wool Wildcat football fans that are wired for spring practice.
So at this point rather than break down the entire offense and defense we focus on the biggest trouble spots.

    Offensive Line

    • Listening to offensive coordinator Neal Brown there’s little doubt he was less than please with the middle of the
    offensive line.

    • The center spot was manned by red shirt freshman Jon Toth and former walk on Max Godby most of the season. It’s not unheard of for a true freshman to come and start at that position. One of Stoops last recruits Jervontius “Bunchy” Stallings from a big time high school program in Hoover, Alabama could surprise. The good news is Toth and Godby have been through the SEC wars.

    • At the GUARD spot Kevin Mitchell graduated leaving a big hole. Godby it a two way player. It’s no secret that they are very high red shirt freshman Ramsey Myers. Red Shirt freshman Nick Haynes is another possibility. There are other mainstays that have a lot of work to.

    Quarterback

    • It seems like eons since Mike Hartline after having been dismissed from the team just prior to the BBVA Compass Bowl. Hartline graduated in 2010 and the last vestige of consistency at the quarterback spot.

    • The candidates to man the quarterback spot are red shirt freshman Reese Phillips who caught the fans eye in last year’s spring game. And evidently that carried over because be uncharacteristically rose the second on the depth chart from the, what call the prep squad in that they prepare the traveling team.

    • True freshman Drew Barker who was a January enrollee and for several reasons captured the spotlight. When asked whether he thought Barker could come and start? “YES,” without any hesitation Mark Stoops said.

    • I’ve been saying for the last couple month’s that unlike of some fans and pundits, I have not counted out Patrick Towles. The word is that the day Barker arrived on campus Towles became a different person in terms of motivation and work ethic. In May he is going to California to hone his skills with George Whitfield. Whitfield has most recently worked Johnny “Football.” He has worked with Cameron Newton and Andrew Luck two starting QB’s in the NFL. This will be Towles third year on the team and played in five games as a true freshman.

    • Jalen Whitlow figures to be a slash and Max Smith coming off of shoulder surgery.

    Linebacker
    • Who will be the bell-cow to fill Avery Williamson’s mike-backer spot. TraVaughn Paschal 6-foot-4, 250-pounds could be the one. D, J. Eliot said he was the fastest linebacker on the squad last year. The staff appears to have recruited well at the linebacker spot including juco Ryan Flannigan. Freshman Dorian Hendrix has been on the team since January. Don’t go to sleep on him.
