  • The Cats Still in the Molding Phase

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

The Cats bumped and squirmed their way to a somewhat comfortable victory in the last game. No doubt Cal is going to have t o mold these talented Cats into a good product. They have the makings of a very good basketball team but it is likely Cal will tell you this is no #1 rated basketball team.
Julius Randle is everything he was advertised to be and then some. He’s made several twisting and contortionist baskets when the team’s was in the throes of stretching out the lead. The cats have three days to get ready for a senior laden Michigan State team.

One characteristic that the Calipari coached teams have is the free throw shooting. Seemingly almost none of his teams have been great free throw shooting teams except the 2012 team.

One of the things they will have to continue to develop is veteran leadership. We see a much more urgent Alex Poythress this season. Remember that last year Poythress had twenty points games the first four games of last season. This is what’s needed to become that type of team the BBN wants to see on the floor. And better yet the type of team that can make a deep run in March.

Randle continues to show that tenacity that’s needed to play at the level of championship basketball. He makes it look so easy that when you look at the post-game stats sheet and see that he had thirty points and fifteen rebounds, it is somewhat of a surprise. Cal says he could have had twenty rebounds. How much more can be said about Randle until he goes against better competition? Calipari is still experimenting to see who the best combinations are when the starting team isn’t on the floor.

One surprise that surfaced in the last game is the scoring ability of Marcus Lee who scored 17 points. We already knew he was jumping jack and could play above the rim. Wille Cauley-Stein looks more comfortable on the floor but he is going to be called on be a shot blocker and shot changer. It was very glaring last year when Nerlins Noel went down to injury. Not having that eraser on the back line was very evident. Lee could help in that department.
