From what the White House and Obama have said over the last month or so:
-- The War on Terror has been largely won, so we can repeal the law that authorized the War on Terror after 9/11
-- The drone program, which targets terrorists, is alive and well and should continue to be used b/c we need them to fight the War on Terror.
-- We need to bring a few dozen foreign nationals who we captured in combat to the US and try them in our justice system b/c keeping them in Gitmo is violating their civil liberties, and that is more important than the information we may gain from them to fight the War on Terror.
-- We need to have the NSA scanning the call behavior of just about every American with secret warrants b/c of the risk of terrorism, and the risks of the War on Terror outweigh the civil liberties of 300 million American citizens
Are there two Wars of Terror and no one told me? One that is nearly over and one that is still ongoing? How did the Constitutional civil liberties of a few dozen non-citizens get ahead of the entire population of American citizens who are actually protected by the document?
-- It was OK that the Sec. of Defense Panetta and others released top secret information about the Bin Laden operation to a film maker. It's also OK that Panetta outed on national TV the Pakistani doctor who helped us set up the operation in the first place, condemning him to prison in Pakistan.
-- This Administration has prosecuted and pursued more government leakers of information to the press using the Espionage Act of WWI than any other Administration since that time, and prosecuted more than all of them combined, and this is a good thing.
-- The White House nor the AG had no idea any media were being targeted in any prosecutorial way
-- Except that one reporter who was named a co-conspirator in the warrant Holder signed of course.
Conclusion: It's OK to leak info to the media if it is beneficial to those who can otherwise prosecute you for leaking information. Leaking info they don't want leaked will lead you down a very different path from retirement and a speaking tour.
-- The White House had no knowledge of the IRS targeting.
-- Well OK it did, but only the Chief of Staff and Chief Counsel, but no one important.
-- The President wasn't told about the IRS situation b/c it was an "on going investigation".
-- The fact that the Chief of Staff and White House Counsel, the most senior White House legal and administrative posts, knew about the ongoing investigation did nothing to compromise it, but if the PResident knew then it would be compromised.
Conclusion: To have him tell it he wasn't told about Benghazi as our compound was being attacked and overrun either, so is it any surprise the use of the IRS to engage in a multi-year politically motivated agenda of rectal exams for his political enemies wouldn't make the cut either?
Seriously, within the last month the President has claimed we've all but won the war against Al Queda and claimed we have to do all these things to our own people b/c of the threat of Al Queda and the war on terror. The list of basic, indisputable contradictions in this White House's positions the last few weeks is astounding, all the more b/c many of them were taken on issues where they didn't even have to take a position. There was no hot issue on repealing the 9/11 legislation authorizing the War on Terror. Why ask to repeal it when that afternoon you're going to give a speech on the need to spy on and even kill American citizens b/c of the threat of terrorism?
It's bizarre, it's deeply flawed, and it's wholly incompetent. This Administration has become the biggest enemy to Constitutional civil rights in my lifetime, and that's saying a lot given the carte blanc Bush had after 9/11 and the fact that my lifespan includes Nixon.
The 2nd Amendment and the gun issue is just an attack by one tentacle of the anti-civil rights monster that is the Obama Administration. taking away guns, prosecuting journalists, intimidating and prosecuting government employees and whistle blowers, spying on vast segments of the population with top secret warrants, the IRS and EPA and who knows what other agencies being used against political enemies. This makes the Nixon White House look like an ACLU rally.
