Compares him to Nixon, but this is from the NYT attorney who represented them in the Pentagon Papers v the Nixon WH, and John Turley who is a top Constitutional lawyer and a liberal, so it's a well written piece that isn't just party politics and finger pointing. Compares actions or attempted actions on multiple positions, including a few that were given as justifications in Nixon's impeachment proceeding.

Basically Obama is able to get away with this stuff b/c he's a liberal, so the traditional groups that fight for civil liberties either can't or won't cross him. There are some powerful comparisons in that piece.

Daniel Ellsberg [man who printed Pentagon Papers that showed the Johnson Admin had lied from the outset about Vietnam] notes that Obama's claimed power to indefinitely detain people without charges or access to a lawyer or the courts is a power that even King George didn't claim. Former judge and adjunct professor of constitutional law Andrew Napolitano points out that Obama's claim that he can indefinitely detain prisoners even after they are acquitted of their crimes is a power that even Hitler and Stalin didn’t claim.

Lots of similarities between tricky Dick and Obama. Both have used "cover-ups" , with the Benghazi one being worse IMO since the act resulted in the death of Americans. Both have emenies list that are attacked, Nixon with the CIA/ FBI and Obama with the IRS.

Obama really "pooped" on his wheaties when his administration went after the AP records. IMO that is the least scandelous action but will cause him the most harm, more than the IRS. The media loved him but not so much now. The IRS scandal has polarized people but he will deny knowledge, blame somebody else. However the medias influence of the people is far more subtle.

The major difference to then and now is two things IMO.

The media back then were actual journalists that came close to telling the truth and facts and we had a congress that worked together. Today they tell what they want people to hear in order to keep their liberal friends in office. If you looked at CNN website the other day no mention of IRS, Benghazi, AP story but we did find out about Jolie and her breast..

Second, there were not nearly the number of hands reaching out to the government for free goods like today. Those hands go with the one who continues to give and don't care what the giver does otherwise.

Only reason we are hearing from the liberal media now is Obama went after AP reporters w/o telling them ahead f time.

Obama and his thugs have done a great job of Teflon coating him so nothing sticks to him.

Agree 100% Doc. The AP grab was one of his lesser intrusions into civil liberties but it will cost him the most politically b/c what keeps him alive politically is a fawning media that openly protected him in the last election. If they turn on him and even treat him neutrally, asking just the most basic tough questions, he's hurting.

A number of Democrats in Congress are also beginning to have real issues with some of these actions. Several are strong advocates of civil liberties and limited Presidential powers. This sort of thing erodes his support among some liberal groups, as it should. When Bush I promised no new taxes and raised taxes his core turned on him, and any self respecting believer in civil liberties should be seriously questioning this President's actions and views.
