I'm thinking of going with the Canon T2i body and add a Tamron 18mm-270mm lens. I want to shoot some up close bug/hummingbird pics along with some scenery shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.

Thoughts?

I own a T2i and I'm reading good stuff on the Tamron 18-270. What else have you looked at?

the Nikon's 5100 and a couple of their newer ones, but type escapes me. Other Canon's t3 and t3i plus some of their older models.

I think you'll love the Tamron lens, it looks like a great carry-around and I've seen it coupled with a Canon 50mm f 1.8 for a great price. Those two lenses will provide a great arsenal to start with. The Canon T series will serve you well. Be sure to shop around, you might find the T3i or even the T4i for not much more $$$.

Coastie, you may or may not have seen this professional review of the lens. Might be worth a look if you have not seen it. Lots of good hands on info

No earthly idea if this is a good price, in the price range, a bad price, or whatever, but saw this in my morning email and thought I'd post it.

The EFs 55-250 is a stop slower than the Tamron and has a minimum focusing distance of 3.6 feet which is not good for the bug shots. It is a great lens and is one of the best for all purpose lenses in the Canon line. The 18-55 is a mediocre kit lens.
