View Full Version : Play 2022 Kentucky Derby, KSR Style

Rules are simple--you have $100 pretend KSR-bucks to wager on the Derby. Person with the most money remaining after the race wins.

One year somebody (Oledon?) said they took the $100 and put it in their pocket. As I recall, they won the contest that year. Kingcat set an all-time record two years ago, walking away with over $1k as I recall.

We'll use the correct odds, but here are the current ones, courtesy of CBS Sports. If you play early, watch for scratches (unless you just want a refund) so you can place another wager.

I do not know squat about horse race betting other than most people lose money doing it. Will someone please let me know if this is a legit betting scenario?

Thanks

Messier Show $20,.00
Epicenter Show $30.00
Barber Road Show $50.00

I am betting from home, so I do not need a mint julep, nor pay for over priced food, pay to get in the downs, nor pay for parking. So I can only lose my $100.00, which is exactly nothing.

Those are legit wagers but show bets on low priced horses like the first two won’t pay much. Barber Road otoh….

When I was in high school, my buddies and I used to go to Louisiana Downs in Shreveport, about 90 minutes away from where we lived. I had a blast betting show bets on some of the better horses, because you could cash in frequently and since I had no idea what I was doing (still don't), it was a way to enjoy the races.

Show parlays are fun. Just keep putting your winnings on a show bet every race. Sometimes it works and you’ve paid for your drinks!

I used to love going to Latonia. On a cold winter night you could be guaranteed to run into Pete Rose.

My biggest challenge in life to to forget I have the Twin Spires App on my phone. With all the races on TV now, it’s an enormous temptation to sneak a look at the entries and odds.

$10 Exacta Box $60
Zandon
Mo Donegal
White Abarrio

$20 Show
Smile Happy

$20 show

I am betting on the better mudders and Barber Road had the best payout if I win, so I put a bit more money on him. I know I would not win much on the other two, but maybe I get my money back on a winner and have fun pulling for 3 different nags. My normal KSR derby bet is nothing on the horses, and pay for food, drinks, admission, and parking out of the $100.00 and pocket the rest. So please be kind to someone that would normally not wager at all.

The one thing I learned from watching hard core horse players is that they aren’t trying to pick the winner of every race, they’re trying to make money. They do have to handicap the races but to make money at it they have to handicap the odds too and try to find value. Once I figured that out I quit trying to win at the track and just have fun lol

I just found out that Epicenter was a product of Westwind Farms here in Warren Co. I know the owners and breeders very well. They are just good ole KY guys who's grandfather started the farm and they have been in the industry for probably 50 or 60 years. They sold the horse to the current owner.

I put a little across the board on Barber Road for mostly sentimental reasons.

White Abarrio: 30 win

Taiba, Zandon, White Abarrio: 10 dollar trifecta box [60.00] (yep, a non doped gray in the Derby big three, but Epicenter could still hurt me here)

Swapped the ten bucks left for a track beer to bet this one..
Crown Pride 10 win

...Oh those Japanese folks, they slipped one in on me.

Still have a feeling on Cyberknife, but I have to bet this.

Solid bet Boss! Some big money late on Mo Donegal will drop his odds.
And I will probably regret going away from Messier. V is the best rider.

I was interested in the D. Wayne Lukas horse Ethereal Road.
Then just realized he scratched.
Ive been sort of out of the loop since yesterday.

Expect him to be heard from in the Belmont.

The old man said "if he gets in the race he will get a piece of it"
Well, he is in and reputed to be bred and trained solely for the distance.
In other words...this race.

I didnt bite though. To date, he is the slowest horse in this race.

Yeah I caught that a little bit ago and edited the above. I have had grandkids since yesterday evening and Donna skipped out today. So I am a little behind the news.

DWL will have him in the Belmont I think.

Epicenter went off at 4-1. Did I win anything with my $30.00 bet? I know I lost $70.00 on my other 2 bets, but did I leave the track a winner or a looser?

I lost $40 betting on Barber Road for real but made most of it back betting at the derby party we went to. That was a great ride by Sonny Leon and he had tons of horse under him.

A thing of beauty really. Perfect ride on the perfect horse for that ride
