Strike 1. My parents took me to a Globetrotters game at the Memorial Field House in Huntington, WV in 1972. Somehow we had 4th row midcourt seats. An amazing performance, and they stayed after the game and signed autographs. Meadowlark was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.

Here’s mine:

Stan Lee…in line behind him in airport security. He was tiny lol.

John Malkovic…was 3’ from him and Diane Lane when I was an extra in Secretariat.

Zachary Taylor…at the national cemetery in Louisville. No one said they had to be alive.

Jeff Bezos…was in Seattle for a small ceremony 6 or 7 years ago and he popped in for like 30 seconds.

Deon Sanders…he almost took my head off with a foul ball down the third baseline at Slugger Field but wasn’t very close.

Strike 2! I went to HS with him. Back then his claim to fame was WR on our AAA state title team and dating the prom queen. Later broke her heart when he became a musician and started doing the things musicians do. But in HS he was just a good ol' boy.

Crud. I thought I would fool you by making it seem like he'd be very unlikely for me to meet, which would throw you off. Didn't fool you.

Yes, Eddie Murphy.

I probably have posted my Reagan picture before. Met Crystal Gayle when I was a college student and she played a concert there. I've met Barkley a few times, first time at a "young lawyers" function at a local bar. Bill Pryor was in school with me and I was his "mentor" his first year as we were from the same undergrad-to-law-school (not that I did anything).

I never thought of Pitino as being famous, but I sat 2 tables away from him and his post game crew at Malones and watched, and listened to him berate a poor unfortunate waitress for 5 minutes.

That would stink.

Total bummer, except for the fact that Heaven Lee was staying at that hotel and I got to see her, in the lobby 2 or 3 times, in her blue jeans and tank top. Quite a sight, but she was dressed. I got an autographed picture of her on stage performing her routine at the Black Poodle club on Printers Alley.

That was her home venue when in Nashville. Sometimes she would stay there for 2 or 3 months performing 3 shows a night to sold out crowds. Older friends told me that to get thru the door for a show, you had to know someone at the club that would help you get in.

So Pitino's the correct answer for me. In 98 a few of us on the old AOL forum got a tour of Memorial Coliseum and met Mr. Wildcat and Tubby, but I've never met Pitino (and from what I understand from Dan and others, that's probably a good thing.)

I got to shake hands with President Carter at a White House Rose Garden reception for Boys Nation in 1980. And I met Bill Monroe at a concert Tom T Hall arranged/hosted in Carter County in 1974. Ralph Emory MC'd. I think it was held at a baseball field or fairgrounds, and they had a temporary stage set up. Anyone could just walk around backstage and mingle with the artists. Crazy.

CitizenBBN
02-10-2022, 03:13 PM
Total aside, but Re Pitino I have met him only to shake hands at some meet ant greet thing once with no names and didn't talk, but I was around him on more than one occasion, and at that time had several friends/family at UKAA and other UK areas where he was involved (like Memorial Coliseum staff, concessions, etc.).

Saying he's a complete ass-hat is an understatement. it's just the truth. and really with no call to be, like berating a waitress or a low level staff member. Really? That's like bitching out the poor girl who is answering phones for the utility company. She didn't do it, why make her day miserable?

Two swings and misses for those that guessed I haven’t met Robert Plant and Muhammad Ali.

I managed a night club for Darrell Griffith at Theater Square in Louisville ( iirc it was 89’/90). One of my bartenders also worked at Ringside, a small bar/pub in the Douglas Loop. Ali used to hang out there from time to time and also donated quite a few pieces of memorabilia to hang on the walls. Anyway Charlie (the bartender) asked if we wanted to meet Ali and that he would set it up for to come into Griffs club.

I walked into work late in the afternoon prior to opening, and Ali was sitting at the bar. I walked up to the bar and Charlie the bartender introduced Ali to me. As Ali stood to shake my hand I gave him a little hands up bob and weave, at which point he did his patented jab, jab uppercut and Ali shuffle. I almost messed my pants, I was frozen, and even though he didn’t touch me it was so close i felt the breeze from his hands past my face and head, I was waiting for the pain to set in. He got a huge kick out if doing that and had a big laugh over the look on my face. We all sat and chatted for about an hour before he left.

I’ll follow up shortly with Robert Plant story.

OK, I started getting a little confused, but I think this is right:

Darrell KSR has been guessed.
Dan_bgblue has been guessed.
Catfan73 is out? Looks like he didn't understand the assignment, or he's fooling us by giving a backstory, one of which is false--which I think would be the cool way to play this.

BigBluePappy and Blueboss remaining, I think, but narrowed down.

Pappy had only 2 remaining after 3 bad picks. I'll go with...Harold Reid, Statler Brothers as the last pick (it's either right, or the only other one remaining is right.)

Blueboss had Ali and Plant guessed, and I just guessed Smothers Brothers, so we'll see if that's right, or if he has two remaining.

I guessed Crystal Gayle for your fake out because most of us that are all around the same age, when we were young we all wished we could meet Crystal Gayle….at least I did.

One question, in the thread header it says met/close proximity, define that for me.

Nope. I met Harold, Don, Phil & Lew when Barbara Mandrell opened for them at Freedom Hall.
Met Time Riley several Times, we share a birthday (August 29) and even got to introduce him to my Father-in-Law - At the NQC when it was held at Freeedom Hall
Met Darrell Waltrip in the pits of Charlestown Motor Speedway - awesomely nice guy
Met Ken Kercheval at the Shell right off of I-65, he owned a popcorn farm in Southern Indiana and his truck wouldn't restart, some friends and I were on our way home from LMS and we got him going. Flooded the truck trying to restart it and he played a Cliff on TV, I play one in real life.
George Younce, while I have seen the Cathedrals many, many times at the NQC, never got to meet one of my idols, Mr. Younce. Got close, but never got to meet or shake his hand.

I have enjoyed this diversion today. It was very nice, thank you.

No one guessed my to Georges. The reason I asked was because I did not personally meet George Bush but was in close proximity to him as in the wings of the stage when he addressed the AMVETS national convention in Louisville which iirc was in 88’. He also waved from the motorcade as it passed by us standing in the side wall.

I’ve never seen in person or met George Clooney.

Rode the PATH with Bill from Newark to Manhattan after the North Carolina East Regional Final. We both stood against the end wall next to each other. I had no clue who he was. When UK fans who were also Reds fans got off at Hoboken they recognized him and started asking him if he had been to Spring Training in AZ. At that time I knew he was someone famous. His son and Grandson were with him and I struck up a conversation about grandson playing Angry Birds. About 5 minutes before the end of the ride I figured it out.

In my youth I tended bar at Jim Porters, I had the honor of asking Hornung to leave at closing time on several occasions. He never wanted to leave, and would even pull the ole “do you know who I am” routine. I always responded with yes, we all know you are, but if you want to be able to come back you need to leave now…please.

Porters is also where I met Jerry West.

Cameron Mills had a Charity Golf Tournament at Connemara Golf Club. Each foursome got to play several holes with celebrities. Tubby, Mumme, Sam Bowie, Jeff Shepard all played. Ashley was the Designated Putter for all groups on the 9th green. We all were able to get together for a picnic lunch and pictures.

On the second hole at Connemara, about 190 yds, Bowie pulls out his 9 iron. That club was longer than my driver. He hit it about 6 ft from the cup. My 3 iron was short.

Correct, even though I was standing a few feet from him when he hit his second shot on the par 5 (iirc number 13, but the course has changed since then) on the back side at Valhalla in the 2000 PGA. He was going for the green and crushed the ball and I said “holy s@&$t” kind of louder than I meant, he gave me a nod and a wry smile as started walking.

So I can’t really claim that one…

Perhaps the most special..

Pee Wee King (I remember when I was a lad he played with friends and family here in Radcliff)

Tex Ritter (Also as a lad, he played a daytime show here in town by the old skating rink (now a liquor store, etc..) I remember my Papaw and his similar aged friends talked with Tex. I just wanted to run around and play.

Jerry Lee Lewis (Played a show in ETown at the Armory when I was just a little older. My Uncle provided maintenance and electrical service. We held the door for him as he walked into the ballroom.
He had the most star like quality about him up close of anyone I ever met.
An aura that left a huge impression on me

Earnest Tubb Similar aura around him. Met him at a steel guitar convention in the nineties. Like a real cowboy and a imposing figure, but with a great smile that lit up the room. Other semi-celebrities' wilted in his presence.

Johnny Paycheck At another convention in Nashville I stood out back of the hotel convention hall and got to meet him. Asked if we wanted a drink and another fellow said he had one. Johnny said "This here is.. Pure...Tennessee...Moonshine"
and belly laughed with us.

A small fellow with a huge voice and came across in person just like he sounds on recordings. His movements were kind of unique and very sudden.
Kind of like a musical version of Wheeler as his head movements were quick as were his facial expressions. ;) He was exactly how he comes across in voice. The real deal in that his voice was as powerful saying a word as singing a song like the one below.

He done his whole Take this job and shove it album for us in a hotel convention room. I’ve known all the Governors and Senators from Montana since 1992. But I’m light on famous people.

Sandra Day O’Connor
Cactus on T Bar V ranch time
Richard Nixon
Duffy Daugherty
Bill Monroe

I will guess Sandra Day O'Connor.

Shook hands with Tricky Dick in Downtown Louisville KY and we spoke, before the MLB All Star game in Cincy. 1970.

Very cool, given Nixon’s story.

Sky, Tom Brooks “Cactus” and Foster Brooks were friends with my dad growing up in Louisville’s West End. and stayed in touch the rest of their lives. The drunk act that became Foster’s calling card was actually an act their dad played out. My dad always told Foster he had to work harder to be as good as his dad. IIRC there were something like 8 kids growing up in that family. There were kids running in and out of that place at all hours of the day. The only times I ever met Foster were at his Ice Cream stand on Bardstown Rd. In Buechel.

But it makes sense now that my adopted Dad was a big fan of Foster Brooks.. Ice cream in Beuchel meant “Fanelli’s” to my family. Building the new road lessened my ice cream intake. I think we talked about the Ford connection with my Uncle Charlie the mech engineer and your Dad—Charlie grew up in west Louisville too. And I did go on T bar V on my birthday. 1957 or 1958 I think. Dad’s younger sister Janet and Uncle Charlie moved to Memphis, he stayed with and retired from Ford and they still live in a Memphis suburb. I was headed there after seeing you but she didnt want visitors due to COVid.

I still cue up some of the Foster Brooks bits, esp. with Dean Martin. He would bust up Dean Martin like Tim Conway did Harvey Corman. His bit on the old roasts are classics.

I crossed paths with Foster Brooks at Hurstbourne CC back in the late 70’s during his pro/celebrity tournament.

Fanelli’s was a favorite. Best ice cream ever. One of the Fanelli kids is a tennis pro here in Birmingham. Fanelli’s was out by Buechel Bank Rd on Old Bardstown. Foster’s was soft serve ice cream. It was up near the Sahara Night Club and Skyway Drive-in.
