DHS to 'Expand and Formalize Coordination' on Gun Control Efforts

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/dhs-expand-and-formalize-coordination-gun-control-efforts_696127.html

"In the aftermath of the tragic Newtown shooting, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), together with the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the FBI have worked to identify measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings. In the coming days, DHS will expand and formalize coordination of ongoing efforts intended to prevent future mass casualty shootings, improve preparedness, and to strengthen security and resilience in schools and other potential targets. DHS will work with partners at all levels of government, to address five critical areas intended to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings in the United States: Prevention, Protection, Response, Education, and Research/Evaluation. DHS will also work with law enforcement to refresh, expand and prioritize the implementation of nationwide public awareness efforts such as the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign. This is a critical issue that requires immediate attention and I look forward to supporting the President and this Administration as we move ahead."

Concerned that DHS is handling any part of this. Continuing to blur the lines of military, law enforcement, clandestine services in undeclared wars home and abroad.

Me too. We all want efficient protection from terrorism, but when that efficiency turns towards our citizenry we should get nervous.

This is clearly not a military nor terrorist issue. they should have nothing to do with it.

This is also a deeply Orwellian concept, and must be treated with great care. Obviously if you see a risk to others you should act, but citizens reporting on each other to the state is also a dangerous path and has literary references in books like 1984 and real world scenarios like how the East German Stasi operated.

homeland security should have nothing to do with lunatics shooting people. it's not a military or foreign or terrorist threat any more than a domestic dispute leading to a shooting.

Rand Paul raised these concerns recently when the Patriot Act was reauthorized.

I think the Patriot Act needs to be re-written and have some serious fine tuning implemented. The intent of the legislation is good, but many parts of it are far too wide ranging and all encompassing, with way too many 'gray' areas that allow Federal "interpretation" to flow in whichever direction the Feds want it to, which invariably is going to infringe upon some honest citizen's civil liberites in the name of "national security" issues. JMHO.
