What recommendations do you have for surround sound systems in a media room? As I mentioned in the other thread, it's a 9.5' x 16' room that is soundproofed.

Specific specs?
Brand recs?
Wireless?
Sound bar?

Thanks!

Do you have drywall up already?

Onkyo is a good balance of affordable and good. You can get an Onkyo HTiB (Home Theater in Box) fairly cheap. That size, I would go with a 5.1 system. Maybe a 7.1 if you want or a 5.1.2 if you can afford it. But a fairly good 5.1 will sound great in that room size.

Yes, the room is essentially finished. Making it a media room was a last minute decision. It was designed to be my home office, but we're going to make it double as media/office.

Then I'd go with a 5.1 and try to get 2 wires ran to the back of the room if you can. I can explain the differences if needed, after the girls go to bed :D

Go to Best Buy or similar and have then help you find a nice set that goes together.

The explanation would be great! I'll be heading to Best Buy this weekend if I get a chance. There's not one where I live, so it'll depend on traveling there.

5.1 = 3 speakers in the front and 2 in the back. 3 in the front are left, right, and center. 2 in the back are surround sound.

7.1 = the same, but 2 speakers on each side about half way in the room. Say if a trane ran over you, you hear it move across the whole room.

The .1 is 1 subwoofer. 1 sub is plenty.

5.1.2 is the same as 5.1 but 2 additional in the ceiling. For height. Example if it is raining you might hear the rain hitting the metal roof of a house from the ceiling.

You are looking at $300 to $1,000. Just depends on you. But I'd try to get at least 5 1/4" speakers up front and a good center speaker. Voices mainly come from the center. Bigger is always better, but a budget determines everything. I once had a Walmart system that sounded fine in a similar room. Plenty of good brands as well. I've just had good luck with Onkyo.

Nothing better than being at mom and dad's house, and seeing dad get up to see who is outside. Not realizing it is the speaker behind his chair.

I prefer wires over wireless. But I'm sure some wireless is fine.

Thanks for all the info. Any wireless specific systems you’ve heard or know about?

No problem. Maybe others will. There’s attic access to the addition, so getting wires may be an option. Thank you so much for the info!

I'm sure the good wireless stuff will work well.

My ten year old surround sound system has wireless rear speakers, in a 9.5x16 room distance isn’t going to degrade the sound.

I’d go to Best Buy and check out what they have. Sometimes they have stuff setup so you can compare before you buy.
