Somehow I missed Ken Burns' "The War" documentary. Mrs. BEvans and I are watching it on Netflix and it's extraordinary.

I saw they're remaking "Midway" and it's coming out this fall. I don't usually like remakes, and Roland Emmerich directing it gives me pause, but I'm a sucker for just about anything WWII so I'm keeping an eye on it.

On D Day, 2 obvious choices for viewing: Saving Private Ryan (especially the 1st act where they take the beach) and Band of Brothers Episode 2 where Easy Company drops in to Normandy.

A 3rd is probably The Longest Day, but sorry to say I haven't seen it so can't comment personally. If it's streaming I'm going to try to catch it.

A young Victoria "Vic" McQueen discovers she has the power to unlock portals that help her find lost objects. As she delves further into this hidden universe, she encounters many other "inscape travelers" - some benevolent, and some who have been corrupted by their power. When Vic encounters Charlie Manx, an immortal who stays that way by feeding off of the souls of children, she makes a sworn enemy of Manx.

I ended up watching all eight episodes, pretty good, with a “don’t miss” ending.

In her quest to watch TV shows from everywhere except the USA, Mrs. BEvans has found "Nothing Trivial" on Amazon Prime. It's a New Zealand comedy/drama (mostly comedy, little bit of drama) centered around the lives of 5 people who meet at a pub for trivia once/week. It reminds me of "Friends" a little bit, also a little bit like "Ed," if you remember that show from way back.

Boxofficemojo says that inflation adjusted that's about $455 million, making it the #85 all time grossing film in US boxoffice, in inflation adjusted dollars.

FYI Gone with the Wind is still #1 and it's not even close, with an inflation adjusted box office of over $1.82 BILLION, just US box office. Given the US population in 1939 I assume every man, woman and child in the country saw the movie at least once to get that kind of number. lol

The best thing that happened to Rocky was the relatively low budget. A more polished production might have removed a lot of the grit you see in those street shots, shots of his apartment, etc. It's like the difference between the original Terminator and Terminator 2. Both good movies, but the sequel feels different.

I remember watching a documentary on the making of the movie. There's a scene toward the end where Rocky is talking to Adrian the night before the fight about how he just wants to go the distance. Stallone thought it was really important, but the studio wanted to not film it because of cost overruns (cost overruns on a $960,000 budget!). Stallone was given 1 take, and he knew he had to nail it. Whenever I see it (and it is a great, and important, scene), I think about that and the pressure he must've felt to get it right.

Thank goodness he didn't lessen "Stop or my Mom Will Shoot" with a sequel. It would never have lived up to the original.

BEvans so nailed it. The movie, due to budget, had a gritty "street" feel to it that exactly matched the story. Do that film with lavish location shoots and award winning lighting and cinematography and you lose the impact of it. It was shot exactly the right way for the story.

And that's also a credit to Stallone. Sure he couldn't do things b/c of budget, but for just under $1 million he told a full, rich story and played it perfectly. As a slow talking action hero with his share of cheesy parts he gets chided, but Rocky shows real talent in both the story and the acting.

He'd done a good job in Lords of Flatbush, and had a leading role in Death Race 2000 but that movie was a total cult cheese fest (which I love btw), so to find a way to get that film backed and made and turn him into a global star is to his credit. He was going to be "Mafia Henchman #2" in a lot of films had he not found a way to break out from that stereotype.

great run. I had in my head she did Rocky first but she did the Godfather movies first.

I'm actually surprised they could afford her and Burgess Merideth and still come in under $1m for the film. That must have been one thin craft service table. lol.

There's a good Tom Petty documentary (Tom Petty: Running Down A Dream) on Amazon Prime. Good perspective on his career and the band's growth from Gainesville.

Only downside: reading a Petty biography by Warren Zanes (https://smile.amazon.com/Petty-Biography-Warren-Zanes-ebook/dp/B00VPZVR0G/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1RS5MD8A989S1&keywords=petty+the+biography&qid=1561990829&s=books&sprefix=petty%3A+the+%2Caps%2C353&sr=1-1), Petty had editorial control and directed no mention be made of a heroin addiction Petty had in the 90s. Makes me wonder what else might've been shaded in the documentary. But I still enjoyed it.

^Wow. Read some articles like this one (https://www.wealthmanagement.com/estate-planning/tom-petty-s-daughters-battle-over-control-late-singer-s-estate) and I don't think Tom would be happy. Sounds like he did a decent job of estate planning by placing his holdings in a trust, but his widow and his daughters are arguing over the trust terms and who makes decisions. Without seeing the documents and knowing the law in the appropriate state (I'm guessing California), it's hard to say whether the daughters have a case, but I bet this is not what he had in mind when he did his planning.

I just finished re-watching the Criterion version of Dressed to Kill and one of the supplements was a dialogue with Brian De Palma who wrote and directed the movie. It was fascinating how his mind works with his choice of actors and his vision on how everything should come together. Basically, he's a reincarnation of Hitchcock.

You would think that for an estate of his size, a quick google says maybe upwards of $100 million, that you'd have some pretty sharp lawyers drawing up the documents, and not leave that kind of vague language that is so critical to the control of the assets.

One of my 4-5 absolute most favorite shows. Love Warehouse 13.

Great, great show. Real characterization, strong female roles, not too serious but serious enough.

The end felt rushed, but they knew they were running out of time to complete story arcs so I don't blame them. Spread it to 7-8 seasons and I think it would have been just superb.

AMC’s, Terror Infamy started pretty slow setting up the back story. It’s up to the second episode and it’s still coming together, but I think here’s what’s going on...

Some Japanese immigrants who settled on Terminal Island apparently did something horrible to a woman from the village they fled. The spirit/ghost has followed them from Japan, the twist is Pearl Harbor just got attacked, so the immigrants are not only being haunted by this woman, but they’re dealing with being Japanese after the attack.

I'm not sure how many directors have done really good work, a couple of bad ones and then dropped out. I wanted to say Michael Cimino (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001047/#director), but he still directed 5 more movies after Heaven's Gate. Anyone else?

Yeah, cant believe I sat through it either.

One I just watched that I believe was really good is Annihilation
Starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh..
Someone described it (as below) and were pretty much spot on..dont know if I really liked it as much as I am just glad I watched it. Eerily entertaining with action scenes that catch you a bit off guard.
Horror, stirred and not shaken. And I vividly remember every scene. That's what I find unusual.
Strangely and unlike me, I had dreams that I was certain were becoming nightmares all night after watching it. But like the plot of the movie itself, Im just not sure that ever developed. That in itself was a little unnerving.

"Annihilation's underlying themes, innovative sci-fi scheme and strong performances from Portman and cast leave audiences befuddled yet mesmerized at the complexities and even the ambiguity of its conclusion"

Mrs. BEvans and I saw the Downton Abbey movie (don't judge me) Saturday night. I'd say it was 2 hours of good fan service. Felt a lot like the extended Christmas specials they did--not a whole lot that was ground-breaking, except seeing the familiar scenery on the big screen. But fans of the series will thoroughly enjoy it, IMHO.

Anybody been watching the Ken Burns documentary, Country Music on PBS?

I think I’ve seen all of Ken Burns specials, this might be the best one yet. I have to say country music isn’t my favorite genre in music, but the names showcased in this series are all phenomenal, pure musicians/song writers.

I can’t help think, this documentary is going to inspire some young minds to strike out on a musical path.

It’s got me thinking maybe I ought to go get out my guitar and start working on some calluses...

Watching it and loving it, blueboss. Just finished the episode covering 1954-1963. Thing is, I've been watching it after 9 pm so I've fallen asleep during parts of it, so I'm probably going to go back and rewatch just to make sure I don't miss anything.

The segment on Ring of Fire was interesting: basically it made the point that June Carter wrote the song about the affair she was having with Johnny Cash. Then Johnny recorded the song written by the woman with whom he was having the affair on which the song was based. And if that wasn't meta enough, he then had the woman with whom he was having an affair and wrote the song about having the affair sing background vocals on the song. Mrs. BEvans knew Johnny Cash was not an angel but that was too much for her. "You know, Johnny Cash was not a nice person." Well, no, not exactly, but he got it straight eventually, which is part of the story, too, and Americans love redemption stories.

I am binge watching Netflick's FASTEST CAR. Is pretty good. Each week 3 competitors take on a Supercar (Mclearan, Ferrari, Tesla, etc) in a quarter mile drag race. All the competitors have home built cars that most look like POS but are freaking fast. One might be a "drifter", another a street racer, another a drag racers, etc...... Show goes thru the backgrounds of the contestants then they race. Season 2 is a 7 episode series where the winner each week goes to the finals, ie 6 cars in a race off 1/4 mile. The winners are quite surprising! Definitely one to watch if you enjoy "car shows" like Wheeler Dealer, Fantomworks, etc that you might see on Motor trend TV. There are some smoking fast cars that look like absolute junk. I have not seen season 1 yet (started with season 2 as it just was released) but season 2 was real good. Watched all 7 episodes in a day and a half.

I will add that I picked the exact order of finish in 4 of the 6 prelims and the 2 I didn't get I was off by 2 cars (flipped the first and second place cars)

Just to add on to the “Circle Be Unbroken” episode, amongst other things,
the one that blew me away was Chris Christophersen. I had no idea about his background in the military, and being a Rhodes Scholar. I knew he had written quite a few songs but again, I had no idea of the number of songs he wrote. Plus resigning his commission and moving to Nashville after hearing Johnny Cash at the Grand Ole Opry.

Looking forward to tonight, 1973-1983

Ken Burns country music documentary wrapped up tonight with the 8th and final episode. If you missed it, you did just that.

Country music was never my first, second, or even third or fourth choice in genres, but my appreciation for music kind of kept me in tune (pun) with country, bluegrass and honkytonk. Growing up in KY, country music is always just there, so at least it’s familiar whether your a fan or not.

This documentary, IMO was the best eight part series of anything I’ve ever watched. Keep your eyes peeled on your local PBS stations for rebroadcasts, and set your DVRs. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed...

I'm going to try Perfect Harmony on NBC. Bradley Whitford is a former Princeton professor who moves to Kentucky and becomes a choir director at a local church. We'll see how long I can take what I'm afraid will be typical anti-south stereotypes.

Prodigal Son on Fox also interests me because of the premise (NYPD officer/estranged son of serial killer uses serial killer's knowledge and instincts to solve murders) and Michael Sheen's in it.

I think I have about a hundred shows downloaded to my phone right now that I intend to watch it some point. And more than that on my virtual DVR. I'll never catch up, but it is kind of handy if I ever get in a situation where I'm just bored to tears, have no internet connection, etc.

Prodigal Son shows potential, hard to tell with the first episode as they’re setting it up.

Pennyworth is “worth” watching. It’s about Alfred’s younger years and how he first gets involved with the Wayne family. (Batman’s family).

Just finished Ken Burns' Country Music series last night, and wow, was it good. He didn't really cover anything after Johnny Cash's death in 2003, and it felt like he zipped through the period from Garth Brooks to 2003. I'd be up for him doing an extra episode updating the last 25 years the way he did his Baseball documentary series. But it was really good, and I was very glad to see him give a good bit of it to the Bluegrass and mountain music my Dad loved, as well as Kentuckians' influence on country music.

Good movie, mostly I like it b/c it has Alan Hale Jr. in it, "Skipper" from Gilligan's Island, one of my favorite childhood shows. Also the plot working around Judge Parker, "The Hanging Judge". It took a fair amount of liberty with him, but there were some threads of truth in it. He did hang a lot of people, and condemned others who were granted retrials or clemency of some kind, but he also publicly said he opposed the death penalty but was following the letter of the law.

he was also the most overworked judge maybe ever. I knew it was a huge load b/c of the vast Indian Territory and that it was chocked full of bad guys, just looked it up to get the numbers. he tried 13,490 cases in 21 years, or 642 cases a year. Said he held court 6 days a week so that's about 2 cases a day average, all year long.

Anyway, I do like how that is woven into the story.

The Spaghetti westerns changed the genre forever. Give Sergio Leone credit.

I actually like Fistful of Dollars a little better in places, but all of them are good movies. They drag a little here and there as the artier Italian films tend to do IMO, but still great.

Eastwood used that style so much thereafter, and I like those too, from High Plains Drifter to Pale Rider. He went to the "man with no name" well a lot.

On vacation at the beach last week and the weather wasn't especially cooperative, so Mrs. BEvans and I watched some stuff via our Fire Stick we brought with us from home.

--Kominsky Method: as stated above, a very underrated and funny show that says a lot to those of us of a certain age;

--Poldark: This season, which was its last, was fine but they left some plot points out there as if there was going to be a Season 6, which there won't be. That felt a little odd;

--The Great British Baking Show: Mrs. BEvans loves to watch it. Me, hearing people speaking in soothing British accents about something I'm not interested in is a great way for me to go to sleep, so it was great to nap to.

We also brought with us Bohemian Rhapsody on DVD, which neither of us had seen yet. I thought it was fine but it didn't knock my socks off. I didn't like that they played with the timeline on his AIDS announcement to the other band members, which made me wonder how much more artistic license they took with the facts. But it was well-acted and the music was good.

Ha, you would think but not really. If you love all things Marvel and Star wars it is great. But it is mostly stuff you have seen. They will have some original content, but it will be slow to roll out.

The other audience is kids and cartoons. Which is the reason I bought it. I like the above, but it is mostly for my girls.

Only G - PG 13 content will be on there. Their rated R stuff will be on Hulu eventually. But price is the big deal. I just don't see how Netflix can compete long term. Disney plans to bundle this with Hulu and ESPN+ for the same price as the middle Netflix plan.

I don't see me having Netflix in a year

Since it's Oscar nomination week, here's a Twitter thread noting actors/actresses who've never won an Oscar. Some big names (Rita Hayworth, Peter O'Toole, Cary Grant, Claude Rains, etc.):

https://twitter.com/biscuitkitten/status/1216764078523330560

John Cazale's an interesting case. He died young from cancer, but you look at the movies he was in: Godfather, Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, Deer Hunter. And he was amazing in all of them--not 1 nomination.

Band of Brothers is exceptional. There's just the one mini-series of it. I usually watch it every year around Memorial Day.

If you're looking for another good war-based mini-series, I strongly recommend The Pacific. It's not much like Band of Brothers--it follows different Marines assigned to different units in the Pacific theater. It's roughly based on 2 war memoirs, "With The Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge and "Helmet For My Pillow" by Robert Leckie, as well as the bio of Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. The violence is also more graphic, IMHO, but that's pretty realistic with the type of battles that happened there. It's really well done.

I'd forgotten the quality of the cast. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 A who's who of actors we're all familiar with. If you've seen it, you might want to see it again. I just watched "The War" documentary by Ken Burns on Netfllix. It was a tremendous seven part series and left a huge impact on me.
Even though I have always held a keen, yet modestly studied, interest in WW2 history.

If you have not watched I seriously suggest it. Even the most educated historians will gain something from it.
I like a good war movie but none can compare to the real thing.

Not for the squeamish either, as there are real candid shots of the horror of American and the other well known casualties of "The War". And no matter who watches, you will shed a tear or two, as our nation as a whole refused to fall to her knees despite given every reason to. We are only a super power now, because of it.
Neither Russia, nor Great Britain would exist as they are today except for our ability to first feed and supply the war in Europe and then fight it against two major powers on different parts of the Globe.

"The War, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history — a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America — and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

The film honors the bravery, endurance, and sacrifice of the generation of Americans who lived through what will always be known simply as The War"

Is there any other movie or show that you can compare it to that I may have seen (in the sense of why you might not want to see it again?)

Some I've seen, maybe, in that vein?

Platoon?

^Yes, too much. Everything is dark and bleak and the way it's resolved is even darker and bleaker.

In a way I guess I'd compare it to "Requiem For A Dream," even though that movie's not a crime thriller--it's about how drug addiction ravages the lives of the main characters. Excellent movie, wouldn't ever want to watch it again.

Saw (https://twitter.com/OldSchool80s/status/1222873358661976065) that Gene Hackman is 90 today. He's one of those guys who's looked 50 for his entire career. Had no idea he was that old, though.

According to IMDB (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/), his last film was in 2004 when he was "only" 74. Makes me wonder why actors stop when they stop. Some will work as long as they can keep getting work, others stop before that. I guess it's like us regular folks (http://www.kysportsreport.com/forums/showthread.php?50779-Retirement-thoughts&highlight=retirement) in that way.

This isn't film, but youtube, but I hugely enthusiastically endorse channels hosted by Simon Whistler.

My favorite is "Today I found out", great 10-20 minute stories on all kinds of interesting topics. Another great one is "Biographics", 20ish minute biographies of historical figures. He does one called "Geographics" about historical places but typically about the thing that made them famous or important.

He has one called "Business Blaze" I don't like as much. Lighter, about business stories, which I like, but a little more loose than the others.

Yeah, he's stupid busy, but a great narrator. English btw, but he has a ton of American viewers so he bridges that nicely.

DW and I went to see Downhill on Valentine's Day. Don't make our mistake. The trailer makes it look like a romantic comedy, but in fact it's a drama vehicle for 2 comedy actors (Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) who want to do something different.

It has a couple of jokey moments but overall it's kind of a serious exploration of a couple telling each other the truth about themselves. Not what we were looking for.

Nooooo. I am not one that is into foreign films with subtitles.

Without giving things away, it doesn't matter. Its barely about what is said. Some is in English.

All I can tell you is that its not just the best movie I saw this year...but its the best Ive seen in a few years.

And the movie just grows and grows until you get to the final act and you are literally just giddy with anticipation. You know what is coming and you don't even care.

Please, just watch it.
