I have this kind of thing from time to time, and thought this article was a good read and good way of handling. A little prep beforehand seems to be the key.

Hey, I probably did a poor job of explaining the article. It's more like, you just lost your job, and somebody asks how work is going, that kinda thing.
Like, how's your 25-year old son doing (the one moving back home) etc.
Hey, *I* can find some use for it.
