View Full Version : USA Total Solar Eclipse 2017

I am damn excited about this as I have never seen a total eclipse. It is occuring on August 21st of this year. It looks like far Western Kentucky is along the path for the total 100% eclipse, the midpoint goes RIGHT through NE Hopkinsville. It includes Bowling Green on the far eastern edge of 100% coverage and Land Between the Lakes and Paducah on the west side. I am travelling down to Oregon from the Seattle area so that I can see the perfect eclipse, plan to drive most of the night so that I can setup early and get a good spot. As a space geek, this is really really exciting.

I would be excited. But we are closing the campus and selling tickets for viewing. Going to be a loooong day.

Pedro, not sure what you are calling early. But Mr. Eclipse spoke at our campus a few weeks ago. He said that arriving somewhere at 6:00 would be too late for a good spot.

Pretty excited, I am actually changing my travel plans. We'll be in Chicago that weekend and heading home Monday. I'm now planning on leaving earlier in the morning so I can get closer to the path in time.

Anybody have a time track chart that's easy to read?

No time track chart, but I had been using Eclipse2017.org. Currently, it seems like they are having some site issues. When it was working you could click anywhere onthe map and it will tell you, in the local time, what time each stage of the eclipse would start.

Closest I can find right now is this list: http://nationaleclipse.com/cities_total.html

What equipment will you have? What is safe? I clicked on the gear on the link provided, but still not too sure what should be obtained (if anything).

Thanks for the info. Looks like where I live (Louisville) will get nearly a total eclipse (https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/louisville). I'm going to try to head west, but if I can't I'm excited about seeing one this nearly total.

That's a great link, KentuckyWildcat.

Take a look at what I thought was pretty cool in Birmingham (similar to Louisville, I think). Then input someplace like Hopkinsville or Paducah, Ky.

I think I am going to have to travel to see this.

I did read that it's more important to check the weather where you'll be, rather than the exact place of a total eclipse. That makes sense.

I would seriously avoid any town that is along the path of totality. Go off center of the path to a smaller town. To most people 30 minutes off of the path will not make in a difference in what they see. Hopkinsville is expecting 100,000 people that day. I've heard estimates up to 300,000 people. We are a town of 35,000..................

Btw the site is perfect and has a short blurb about online purchase capability coming soon.

We are also selling a limited number of throws (small blankets if that is the proper term) but they do not glow in the dark. And when I say "we" it is really Barnes and Noble, but we HCC, do get a share of the sales.

As for the photography, Dan, you and he may know this, but no one filter and camera setting can capture all of the various light from the eclipse.

I'm a tad frustrated b/c the "more info" is behind IMO....but not my department :)

Oh, I also know a lady selling other shirts. I can get that info as well.

It is a silly issue about us (HCC) paying for the cost of the shirts, but Barnes and Noble handling the sales, even though both of us benefit from it. I think the issue is with B&N...

Driving down somewhere near Hoptown with my son on the 21st. Total solar eclipses are literally once in a lifetime events for most people and we decided we had to go. It doesn't hurt that Mrs. Catfan73 will be there with about 3 busloads of kids from the school where she teaches.

I know several good people in Guthrie and have nothing against the town at all, but if you are driving in from Louisville, you can save yourself a few miles of driving by stopping in BG, or going just a bit further down the road and stopping in Franklin, Total eclipse should happen both places.

Franklin zip 42134, and BG zip 42104. There are several BG zips, but the south west side of town where I live uses 42104.

I remember a partial that occurred around the time I was my son's age or maybe a little younger and I still remember how cool it was watching it with a shadow box. So maybe a little bit of it is nostalgia but I've never witnessed a total one in person and don't want to regret not giving him that experience. My calendar was clear on the 21st anyway.

Yup. Planning on a trip to Hopkinsville is great, BUT if it is forecast to be mostly cloudy there on that day, then a trip to Franklin or Bowling Green with a forecast of mostly sunny that day might pay off in spades. I am taking my chances to see it from my back yard and will not be traveling, but the NWS forecast 2 days out is your friend for the viewing public.

I wasn't real happy with Amazon or their vendor. They price gouged a bit. Went from $100 for a 10 pair pack last week to $130. Not a huge deal, and I get it, but just a slight rubbing of my fur the wrong way since it's Amazon.

I just got off the phone with a client who is also a good friend that lives in Hopkinsville. He often curses when he is really upset, and he was really upset. He was on a mission to go to his local bank, and was stuck in traffic. Said the local police were setting up barricades and rerouting traffic to the point that the locals could not get where they needed to go. He told me that when he could get out of the ^%$#^%#%$#^%$ traffic jam he was in, he was going home to pick up his wife and a few things and leave town until next Wednesday.

I was disappointed the local pharmacy did not have the solar eclipse glasses in stock for Wednesday, as I had one pair for my daughter in Georgia that we were moving into college that day. But she said today they have them for the students on Monday, so that's good.

I thought this was important enough to create a separate thread on it, but also wanted to put it here. If you do not have any solar eclipse glasses, spend 5 minutes or less, and make this super easy pinhole projector out of a cereal box and a piece of aluminum foil.

This is from the Samford University head of the planetarium. He did 9 presentations yesterday. He is uber-pumped about it. They gave our 1400 pairs of glasses, free, but he's out and recommends this (He didn't create the video, but this is the one he recommended.)

Super easy. Probably a better experience, frankly. I'm thinking about doing both.

She just gave two bucks a pop. At the Visitors Center.

The city should be commended for that.

Nice.

I know nobody there would be interested, but a small variety store in Mountain Brook (Birmingham) opens in 15 minutes today. They picked up 10,000 pair last night they will be selling for $7.99 each today.

We came to my in-laws' in Dawson Springs. Not on the center line, but close enough and we're not having to deal with all the mess.

I'll be viewing from home today. The school district decided midweek last week to close, due to liability issues. Borrowed four pairs of glasses from our science department for today.

When I checked last week the glasses were being bid way up on eBay.

Here in the Louisville area we had roughly 96% of totality. I thought it would be a lot darker than it got at it's peak. It just shows how powerful the sun is.

If you see any footage from the AP in Hopkinsville, I played a part in that. Could be my claim to fame....

If I get our balloon footage, I'll post that on here. We had a balloon in near space during the eclipse.

We were about the same.

Far more light than I anticipated, but interesting other effects. First, it was a lot darker IMO than we perceived. We have an "OPEN" sign on our business that is neon, and on a full sun day it's so washed out that it's almost hard to tell it's on. It was bright as day during the eclipse. There was a huge reduction in light even though it wasn't "dark".

Also, it wasn't hot. Usually you are out in the sun and you can feel that heat on your skin. It got cool during the eclipse, at least not warm.

Would have been interesting to be in the totality, but it was interesting at 95% too.

The twilight leading up to the total eclipse looked weird, not at all like twilight when the sun is setting. It went from twilight to dark in the blink of an eye. I did not blink but it was just like I flipped a light switch in the house, and when it was over it was light again without fading to twilight. I did get to see the diamond ring and that is one odd phenomenon. The light that makes the diamond is brilliant white light, not an orange light that we normally see from the sun.

FWIW, the April 2024 eclipse path goes through Kentucky. It will be a bit closer for those of us in the Eastern part of the state.

For those that didn't go through the totality, it is something to behold. Even at 99.9% the sun is too bright to look at. It is really trips the mind a bit, as it gets darker and darker. We are so used to dusk including the oranges and reds before dark that the transition into darkness, that the eclipse transition feels weird and wrong. It almost feels like you have sunglasses on, but with a slightly metallic feel. When the totality hits though, EVERYTHING goes beyond words. Seeing the corona of the sun is just incredible. Describing it as a diamond ring is very apt. It has colors in certain areas, bright iridescent textures. I literally had seeing a total eclipse as a life goal. It was almost a religious experience for me.

I felt the same. As totality descended, so did a slow developing roar of excitement from the crowd. My four grandchildren,(2,5, 7, and 12 were yelling and dancing around. It was surreal.

Well, just saw on the news that Hopkinsville was a breeze getting to to watch the big show... getting home on the other hand was not so breezy.

People were saying it took them 7-8 hours to make the 3-4 hour drive home.... kind of tarnished their experience.

Just like with most things, I'm sure there's a good story for every bad story.

We've got a little less than seven years to plan the next one to arrive in North America,4-8-2024.

boss, I had a business engagement today in Lexington that required an overnight stay in Lex. I left BG at 2:00 pm CDT yesterday and got to the hotel at 8:05 pm EDT last night. Traffic northbound on I-65 was 3 lanes of maddening frustration for me. The trip is normally 2 1/2 hours for me and it took 5 hours yesterday. Southbound traffic was perfectly normal, but northbound was wall to wall cars and trucks, and it was way more cars than trucks which is a bit unusual for that stretch of road.

It generally takes right at three hours to drive between Lexington and Dawson Springs. It took more than that to get from Dawson to Elizabethtown last night, but once I-65 took the north-south traffic off the highway it was a pretty normal drive on to Lexington. In those first four hours, we came to a complete standstill for several minutes at a time at least four times. It was crazy. And getting data through a cell tower was pretty much impossible.

It took us 6 1/2 hours to travel from Bowling Green to Radcliff.. Once we were an hour and ten minutes travelling two miles from Upton to the Sonora ramp..and this was on 31W. We bypassed the ramp and continued on Dixie

It was still faster than I 65

Mrs. Catfan73 and the 6 buses from her school didn't get back until almost 11:30 Monday night and it took some schools longer than that. She said once they finally got back to the WK Pkwy they headed north to Evansville and jumped on I-64. It just took forever to get to I-69.
