Daughter had a friend over a couple of nights ago to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Her friend recently got married. You may remember me complaining about a wedding I attended in May that rained (outdoor wedding, of course), and the coldest day in history of Birmingham on that particular day (40's).

Anyway, Laura is a sweetheart, but she's always sort of had luck like that. So we were asking about their honeymoon. She's a grocery teller and he worked at a movie theater, and paid for the wedding themselves, so they were on a tight budget.

Poor thing. She has been on some family cruises before, and loved them. Her hubby doesn't like cruises, but she convinced him to go because all of their entertainment would be there included. Stuff he likes to do.

So they get there. It's a small cruise ship, not like the ones she's been on before. Didn't realize she'd get seasick. She did. Miserable.

Then all the fun things that hubby was going to do... Not on that ship. No golf, mini-golf, not even a basketball goal to shoot hoops. Oh, and did I mention he is afraid of water and doesn't like to swim? Yeah, perfect idea for a cruise. He spent his time eating (he struggles with his weight) and in the casino (no extra money, really).

So they arrive at port, and I didn't completely understand this, but they eschewed all of the advice they were given to pre-purchase some sort of resort package thing. They thought they would free-lance, enjoy the beaches, etc. Apparently where they ported, there were no beaches. Just panhandlers and people that looked like they would knock them in the head. Meanwhile, all the other passengers were whisked to a different part where they experienced "Shangri-la," according to Laura.

There were some other funny parts, too (the folks they dined with didn't realize you bring regular clothes and formal attire, and were eating with bathrobes the entire cruise, etc.)

Anyway, no need for cautioning anyone here, but it does point out you need to do your homework.

It will make great stories for them on their 40th wedding anniversary.
