The last surviving member of the original Mercury astronauts, dead at 95:

Flew 149 combat missions as a Marine aviator in WWII and Korea, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross 5 times, 1st American to orbit the earth, oldest American in space. A true hero.

I'm going to have to break out my copy of "The Right Stuff" and give it another watch.

I remember the day he first circled this earth. I was riding in the backseat of my Daddy's white tricked out 57 Ford on the way to Louisville to spend the weekend with my uncles family.
The radio coverage was mesmerizing for a little feller' and he became a hero to me from that moment on.
