One of favorite shows growing up. Any other Dark Shadows fans besides me?

I was a pretty big fan of Barnabas. He humanized monsters for me somewhat as a young guy.

My sisters loved it. I was too busy playing with my hot wheels tracks.

My sister to this day loves that show. Can somebody tell me something? What is it with girls and vampires? Is it that "bad boy" thing? Or what? I have never been able to fathom it.

Probably not the place to get into it, but the vampire mythos is seen by my literature people as being based very strongly in sexuality and the breaking down of socially accepted (read class based during Stoker's time) barriers to relationships.

Oh, I'm sure you're right on point or pretty darn close to it on that. Good observation. I had not looked at it in that context.

In the original Westernization of the mythos, Bram Stoker's Dracula, there is a strong emphasis on the Count pursuing this woman, and in the biting on the neck and the overall seduction a strong parallel to the more obvious 'taking' of a woman, complete with the tie ins of purity (virginity) and the woman giving into desire over the demands of proper society, like being attracted to the mysterious Dracul versus finding interest in a more conventional suitor.

And that works both ways. In the book the hero is nearly seduced by Dracul's female companions, specifically by all of them at once. It was a purely sexual appeal that then turns into being bitten. There is an obvious seductive nature to the way most all female vampires are written. They're almost always overtly sexual and demonstrate it strongly.

Not to mention how they often get eternal youth and beauty, etc. Other than in the original Nosferatu film, where the vampire is more like a traditional lurking, hunting monster.

When you think about it versus a traditional "monster" hunting someone, I think the difference is vast. Now there are the misunderstood monster relationships that aren't really romances but a befriending, like Frankenstein, and the man turned ugly but powerful monster thing like Swamp Thing and Deadpool where they get the girl, but those are really twists on hero themes not a twist on a monster theme.

Now as for these fairly wussy, metrosexual vampires that are the rage among 14 year old girls, I can't explain that appeal any more than I can boy bands, though I do think the attraction itself is identical.

I watched Dark Shadows when I was a young pup. I also watched the remake that was on about 20 years ago, the remake didn't air long.

The origin of vampires is a love story from Greek mythology and of a love triangle between Appolo, one of his human handmaidens Selene, and the first vampire , Ambrogio an Italian adventurer, as well as side deals made with hades and the virgin goddess, Artimus.

hades held Ambrogio's soul as a result of a deal to protect him from Apollo.

All vampires they eventually created were said to carry the blood of Ambrogio and Selene( the eventual goddess of moonlight) who were finally together eternally, but could not lay with each other in the normal sense to have children. They supposedly lived in a cave in Ephesus worshipping Atriums every night, and when she was aging and about to die, Artimus told him he could touch her just once, to drink her blood.
As he set her limp body down, Selene began to radiate with light, and raise up to the sky.

* Ambrogio watched as Selene's glowing spirit lifted to meet Artemis at the moon.* When she arrived, the moon lit up with a brilliant light.
Selene became the goddess of moonlight, and every night she would reach down with her rays of light to the earth and finally touch her beloved Ambrogio as well as all of their children - the newly created vampires who carried the blood of Ambrogio and Selene, together.

And so most all vampire stories are steepe in a combination of stolen love, abnormal desire, and sexual deviancy

Ran across this accidentally. Now trying to figure out how a grown man can justify buying a metal Dark Shadows lunch box, but I want this badly lol.

Maybe I can use it as an ammo can? Help me out here.

Used to watch it after school when I was in 5th or 6th grade, then a buddy and I would discuss the next day lol. But it was basically just a soap opera with vampires.

I don't know. You know, you always remember things fondly from 50 years ago, but I really enjoyed it as a youngster. Like Catfan73 and Kingcat said, it was basically a soap opera with Vampires...but it sure was cool. It had that "added drama" to it that made it really fun to watch.

Can it hold Palm Pilot parts?

I went to Lowe's yesterday to get something and passed by a screw extraction kit. I was wondering where mine is, and almost picked one up. Would've fit in it perfectly; thanks for the suggestion. My wife will not be happy with you.

As a side note...I miss my Palm Pilot. I love basic function devices.

Introduce her to American Pickers. They do 2 or 3 shows a year that include segments of them buying classic lunch boxes. For the money they spend o0n some of their purchases you should be able to convince her it is a good investment.

Feb of 56 here. I recall the only thing half decent to watch before DS came was The Loretta Young show. Nothing against her but Needless to say I was excited as all get out.

Anyone around Louisville recall the On air break in giveaway show called Dialing for Dollars? Not sure which Louisville channel that was. I kept hoping they would call me. Never thought that they didn’t have my info nor anyway to know who I was.

Yeah, I get that a lot. Smart lady.

(the B answer to that was "I've had a number of men's wives very happy with me over the years, so I guess I'm due for one to not like me." :) )
