How do you shave? Electric, disposable, double edge, straight razor, or bearded guy?

Recently decided I'd try double edge razor shaving. Just thought the whole idea appealed to me of getting back to basics, while pampering the face with luxurious lotion and brushes, etc.

This is after years of being 90% electric razor, 10% cheap disposable razor (traveling, and occasional use at home).

I got a fairly low-end razor for about $20 that is a conservative, non-aggressive razor, and trying different blades now. Have a horsehair brush for now, with a badger brush ordered. Tried two different shaving soaps so far (one terrible, one decent), and shaving oil I like.

Takes a little longer, and I have had an occasional nick here or there--with one really bad occasion of razor bumps when I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing--but have enjoyed it. And no doubt, it's a smoother shave, even for my beard, which is pretty sporadic. I'm still in my first month of "the change," though, and still evaluating how I like it.

What do you do? Share your tips and your get-up if you will.

My shaving is pretty simple. Hot water to wash face and rinse with hot water. I have a triple blade razor that I have had for 20 years or more and that is all I use. My shaving cream come out of a can. I do not look at shaving as an activity to enjoy but more as a chore that needs to be done every morning.

Full beard, but I still trim it up daily.
Most of the time, just wet the face with hot water and go at it with a Gillette fusion with the old vibrating head.

Once a week, usually Sunday morning, I pamper myself with actual shaving soap and a brush and an old straight razor; even have an old strop...

Will probably give that up before too long...just isn't worth all the extra fuss.

Braun Electric, with one of those self cleaning/charger stations. The cleaner stuff gives the shave head a nice lemony smell.

I like it, used a dbl/blade with canned cream prior to the Braun...I don't ever see me going back.

I've had it about ten years, I've replaced the foil and the blade part once about a year ago.

I get up, look in the mirror, snarl with a mean glare at my whiskers, and they f' off immediately in terror. Sometimes if I let it go 4-5 days it doesn't work as well, they get all uppity, and then I have to shave. I sharpened a piece of old tin roof with a rock and have used that since I was 9 and started shaving.

My grandpa says I'm a wimp. He just uses a rock. As an abrasive generally to wear them down and then he just beats the really stubborn ones with it.


Seriously, I use a gillette two blade sensor razor and whatever soap happens to be handy. Haven't used actual dedicated shaving cream or such in forever.

For all you soap/blade guys. I had poison ivy a few weeks ago and I stumbled over some soap that I think would be ideal for shaving.

Kirks Natural Coco Soap. It came in a three pack in a generic looking white wrapper. Supposed to be all natural and hypoallergenic... anyway it's the foamiest soap I've ever used yet rinses surprisingly well, and seems like it work well for shaving.

I found it at Krogers kind of at the other end of the shelf where all the other name brand soaps are.

I'd rather just shave every 3-4 days but work prevents it. But on my days off I guarantee I don't shave.

I really enjoy the process. Take my time, hot water, shaving oil, shaving soap in a bowl and a brush (I use horsehair, which has been great, but may move to badger sometime. Then again, that Wisconsin connection sours me...).

Nice sharp blade, the feel of the hot metal heavy razor, and short strokes almost like you're painting the whiskers off.

I finish the first pass with the grain, lather up again with the soap in the bowl, then go cross grain on my second pass. I am not going against the grain for now, as it gets it plenty smooth for me.

Hot water splash off, and a post shave balm for the skin. I run into all kind of people so I don't use scented stuff, but it's a clean smell, slightly tightens the skin but doesn't have alcohol in it (I'd rather splash alcohol inside my face than on it).

Just a good experience. I sometimes am tempted to go back and catch that small area that I didn't get perfectly under the nose or something, but I'm using my electric razor if a minor touch up is needed. Also do the same on day 2 if I need a touch up (usually don't).

Much cheaper than the Gillette/Schick blades you buy in the stores, so I switch blades more often and my face is happier. :D

I am. I've never taken this much time to shave, and finding the process enjoyable. I actually look forward to it.

I placed a stopwatch down last night to see how long it was taking, and it was a tic over 15 minutes. That's an excessive amount of time if you are in a hurry, getting ready for work, etc. It's a luxury.

I am basically shaving once every two days with an occasional electric razor touch up and occasionally I am skipping the full shave process in favor of a 3-5 minute electric razor shave. So maybe twice a week I have this luxury.

Have tried two different types of blades and will continue to experiment with different blades as well.

I just ordered a KEDSUM nose hair trimmer to keep that unruliness in check, and a couple different shaving creams to break the monotony. Via Amazon. I'm still working in uniform, so I have to shave every working day, plus one day on the weekend depending on which day we choose to attend Mass. And I haven't used any scented aftershaves in years now, I just roll with straight-up 70% alcohol on my face after shaving.
I use a Gillette Mach 3 razor, but I do have a wet/dry electric razor too in case I have a rough spot that needs to be smoothed out for special occasions when I have to be 100% perfect for appearances purposes.

Gasoline and a match works for me! It's getting hard to find gas without Ethanol though, so I may have to go to propane or something that burns hotter. After Ethanol sets awhile, it don't burn clean and leaves patches of whiskers, causing me to look like a dog with the mange!

Thanks for the link on the trimmers. I usually use a small pair of grooming scissors but they're very pointy and sharp for what they're made for. I'm going to give the trimmer a try.

I've had an old Schick Tracer razor (double blade) for close to 20 years but 2 or 3 years ago they stopped making the blades for it. I found that you could order them from Amazon, often under their Euro moniker, Wilkinson Sword Performer or some such thing. I was ordering about 6 months' worth at a time but it finally got to the point where it was almost like buying them on the black market it was getting so ridiculously expensive. So I finally broke down and bought a Gillette Extreme 3 (3 blades). It works fine but I was sad to see my old friend go into the wastebasket. I don't understand the thinking behind if two blades are good then three must be better and four or even five even better than that.

Previously, I use to have big issues with skin irritation and I think I have it down pretty well now. Tried several electric razors and they all irritated my skin too much. I still utilize my Mach 3 razor (the blades are pretty inexpensive and I keep talking myself out of the straight blade razor). Any way, so here is my routine. First, I take a nice hot shower to get those pores opened up and I make sure my face is clean. Second, when I get out of the shower I do a little pre-shave unscented beard oil to help that razor glide over the skin and prevent irritation. I like Lather & Wood Unscented pre-shave beard oil. First with the grain and then against the grain. After the first swipe I also re-apply beard oil and my shave butter. Wes, you're probably a little higher end on it than I am. But here's what I'm using right now.

I was going to get a Merkur 34C, but a) it was a little more expensive, and b) I had to order it, and, well, I was in Walmart and looking at something that was about half the price. I would be fine with the non-butterfly, and I read criticisms of this type of mechanism, but I figured for $18, if it didn't last that long, it would still be worth it. Still going strong.

I read about badger brushes; I read about boar brushes; and I read a really good article from (shavebest?) that talked about horsehair being underrated as a cross between the two (and also could be found inexpensively). Since I was just getting into the art of shaving, I thought I'd try that to begin with. I don't have a link for it; think I bought one from eBay, one from Shavebest or something like that.

After I conclude, I've been using the Nivea Men's Sensitive Post Shave Balm (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Nivea-For-Men-For-Sensitive-Skin-After-Shave-Extra-Soothing-Balm-3.3-fl-oz/10810947). It claims to sooth skin irritation and improve skin defense over time. I don't know how it does that; it probably should scare me. It has vitamin E in it, no alcohol, witch hazel extracts, etc. It goes on a little smooth and slick, maybe feels a little "greasy" but not in a bad way, and then after a couple of minutes, it tightens the skin. If I missed a spot (that under the nose area, chin, or occasionally high next to the ear), I will take my electric razor during this time, and it absolutely glides over my face, so the shave balm serves two purposes there.

I haven't had to use this in awhile, but I have had to use this Styptic Pencil (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Clubman-Styptic-Pencil-.33-Oz/10449225). Beats the heck out of tiny toilet tissue hanging from your neck. I probably jinxed myself; I did not wet shave yesterday, watch me cut the heck out of my face today.

It actually lasts a good long time, too. I've been using it regularly since I started this, about 3 times a week, and I still have more than 1/2 a bottle remaining, and use plenty each time. I called it greasy but not in a bad way; I wasn't really sure what to call it. I meant it positive, not negative. Just goes on smoothly, face stays slick if you need to use an electric razor or something for a short period, but dries in just a couple of minutes, tightens your pores, makes the face feel very good, and doesn't dry out the skin. Not sure if it moisturizes the skin or not; it may, but it certainly doesn't dry it out.

Just kidding. It's actually quite an historic tradition of men taking time to shave and such, mostly lost since the advent of disposable razors in the post WWII era. Of course at that time hair gels and such were also part of the mix.

Part of that is due to the fact that there weren't as many options, the other that everyone didn't shower and shave every day so it was a more special occasion thing.

personally I just slap on a little soap and use a simple 2 blade Sensor razor. Not perfect but sufficient. When I can I don't shave but after 4-5 days it really bugs me.

Darrell - I have yet to use a shave soap, but I do like the shave butter. I just lather it in my hands and go from there...might not be doing that entirely right, but at the same time I don't really want to spend time on cleaning up a brush after using it.

As sad as this is, I'll admit to it, so I signed up for Pinterest and have read a lot of really good articles with shaving products, how to shave, razors, etc... in fact it's becoming a favorite of mine because whatever interests you want articles or pictures about (mine are bourbon, shaving, sports cars, and women in workout attire I.e yoga pants)...that's all that shows up on your wall. It's pretty nice in fact except you have the Pinterest app.....but if you can deal with that then I'd recommend trying it.

Follow-up 7-months later....

a) I am still using, and enjoying, the Van der Hagen safety razor. Have sort of figured it out and it just fits well.

b) I have not changed soaps yet; in fact, I bought another bar of it. I have only bought two since I began, but about ready for a new purchase. I could be talked into something else, but I will probably stick with it. I vacillate between using it almost like a cream (less water, more soap) and really lathering it up good (takes longer, begins very thin, have to work into it). c) Still like the Shave Oil. Cheap and works. Used my first bottle up about a month ago, but it lasted about six months, so 3-5 drops really lasts. Occasionally I will use 1-2 drops and my electric razor if I'm in a big hurry, and it helps. If I'm not in a huge hurry, but don't want to spend the time for the full shave experience, I'll use 3-5 drops with hot water, and no shaving soap. I do a one-pass version that works fine for a day.

d) For razor blades, I bought a 100-pack of the Astra Superior Platinum Premium blades for about $11 on Amazon. Will probably last a lifetime. I use one blade for maybe 5-6 shaves, and I don't shave every day with this razor. I can get by every other day usually, or with a fill-in shave with my electric razor. So one blade literally lasts me close to two weeks. I probably bought a 4-year supply of razor blades. I may start replacing them sooner; they're certainly cheap enough.

e) I still use the Nivea Men's Sensitive Post Shave Balm every time I shave. And the 4 oz bottle has lasted over six months doing it. Only takes a little.

For shaving, my normal is a "two-pass" method. I use the blade down my face, but up my neck, for pass # 1. For pass # 2 (re-lather, and start again), I go from my ears sideways to the lip area. From there, under the nose, I just go the same direction again. I find that area very sensitive for me, so I just "re-do" it the same way. Same for my chin.

Occasionally, if I have a ton of time, and/or I am planning for sure not to shave the next day, I'll do a three-pass method. There I shave from my mouth area back toward the ears on the face (same for throat). On the throat, on the 3rd pass, I'll usually check very carefully to see if I need to go downward against the grain of the whiskers, because that can be my bugaboo.

80% of the time it's a two-pass method; 10% one-pass, 10% three-pass.

Wes, you're probably a little higher end on it than I am. But here's what I'm using right now.

I went with the Van der Hagen Safety Razor (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Van-der-Hagen-Traditional-Safety-Razor/49543575?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=1711&adid=22222222237260399021&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=108838443870&wl4=pla-183825770417&wl5=9012570&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=49543575&wl13=1711&veh=sem). I liked the heft, and although I have used longer razors when shaving traditionally, I read up enough on it initially to see a lot of advice given to hold it a little differently, closer to the head, and it seemed to make sense (for me) to get a shorter one anyway. I was going to get a Merkur 34C, but a) it was a little more expensive, and b) I had to order it, and, well, I was in Walmart and looking at something that was about half the price. Oh, and I love the old-style butterfly type opening. I would be fine with the non-butterfly, and I read criticisms of this type of mechanism, but I figured for $18, if it didn't last that long, it would still be worth it. Still going strong.

I use the Shave Secret oil (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shave-Secret-Shaving-Oil-0.63-fl-oz/10324376), purchased because it was cheap and adjacent to the razor. Yeah, marketing works. For about $4, I got a small bottle of the shaving oil--it's only 18.75ml, which is less than 1/3rd the size of what you use.

I use 5 drops of it (it says 3-5 drops, but it lasts a long time at that rate, and why not?) and rub it into my face. I like the menthol and clove smell to it.

I'm not thrilled with the shaving soap I'm using, so I will revisit that soon. I bought the Van Der Hagen Shave Soap (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Van-Der-Hagen-Scented-Luxury-Shave-Soap-3.5-oz/34496241), which was pretty inexpensive at about $4. I may try something different (I edited here, because I got all mixed up on what I actually bought, and had to go check. Today is Thursday, and I often work at home Thursday mornings, which made this convenient.).

I have three brushes; two I bought and one my son gave me. The one I'm using now is horsehair. I read about badger brushes; I read about boar brushes; and I read a really good article from (shavebest?) that talked about horsehair being underrated as a cross between the two (and also could be found inexpensively). Since I was just getting into the art of shaving, I thought I'd try that to begin with. I don't have a link for it; think I bought one from eBay, one from Shavebest or something like that.

After I conclude, I've been using the Nivea Men's Sensitive Post Shave Balm (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Nivea-For-Men-For-Sensitive-Skin-After-Shave-Extra-Soothing-Balm-3.3-fl-oz/10810947). It claims to sooth skin irritation and improve skin defense over time. I don't know how it does that; it probably should scare me. It has vitamin E in it, no alcohol, witch hazel extracts, etc. It goes on a little smooth and slick, maybe feels a little "greasy" but not in a bad way, and then after a couple of minutes, it tightens the skin. If I missed a spot (that under the nose area, chin, or occasionally high next to the ear), I will take my electric razor during this time, and it absolutely glides over my face, so the shave balm serves two purposes there.

I haven't had to use this in awhile, but I have had to use this Styptic Pencil (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Clubman-Styptic-Pencil-.33-Oz/10449225). Beats the heck out of tiny toilet tissue hanging from your neck. I probably jinxed myself; I did not wet shave yesterday, watch me cut the heck out of my face today.

Oh--I have used several different blades so far. I used the Van der Hagen blades that came with the razor and an additional pack I bought (I have plenty left), the "by reputation, super-sharp" Feather blade, and a Gillette blade. I bought a sample pack of 10 different blades to try out. I am probably not as discriminating as others, as I haven't really felt much difference between the three I have tried so far.

But you know, for 2-3 cents a shave, I splurge! I don't know how many blades I have left, probably 90 (I had some variety pack before, and some Gillette, etc., so I didn't start using them right away).

c) As I said, I do touchups with my electric razor. The combinations work well. I have settled on a "two-pass" system with my double edge blades, where I go down my face with the first pass, and up my neck; and the second pass I go from my ear to my nose sideways on both sides of the face and throat. Caveat--I always shave down twice under the nose, as well as my chin. I found early on if I didn't, I had a tendency to nick myself. After I shave twice, I carefully shave upward under my nose to get a smooth shave from those whiskers between my nose and upper lip and I haven't nicked myself yet doing it that way.

d) I am continuing to use the same shave soap and oil routine. I found that rather than using more soap, using less and more water worked even better. I "lather" it with the horsehair brush on my face itself and it lathers up pretty good. It's not super-thick, but plenty, and the razor glides, which is the main thing. I do very much like the horsehair brush and glad I stuck with that combo/betweener option.

e) I also occasionally use a Neutrogena men sensitive skin shave cream (http://www.neutrogena.com/skin/skin-men/neutrogena-men-skin-clearing-shave-cream/6802025.html) (this is the shave butter stuff in a tube)--use a quarter sized dollop of it, and it works well when I have less time. Picked it up for under a dollar with some sort of coupon or something and it is lasting forever because I don't use it very often.

Same soap. Van der Hagen. It's OK. Takes longer than it should to really lather up good, but really enjoy using the shaving brush and the soap bowl and then lathering it on my face. Probably should look for a better soap when it finally runs out.

Same shaving oil, but almost never use it. Sometimes I'll use it if I'm using my Philips One Blade. I'm not sure I can tell the difference, but I kinda like the smell. If I'm in a hurry, and want to use my safety razor, I'll throw a couple of drops of it in my hands with water and shave that way. Lot quicker to clean up.

Same post-shave cream, Nivea post shave balm. Really soothing. Soaks in skin. You think it's going to be greasy, but it's not.

Added the One Blade to my electric razor duo. Now when I don't feel like shaving and can get away with it, I don't shave. But if I need to not look disheveled, and/or I've gone several days without shaving and want it to be nice and comfortable, I'll use the One Blade. Super quick, and doesn't get as close as a real shave but comfortable, quick, and passable, even if you haven't shaved in several days.

I use my electric razor only as a "go over" after I use my safety razor when I want to be really close.

Same styptic pencil. Rare that it ever is needed. I sometimes forget how long I've used a blade, and if I nick myself, I automatically punish the wrongdoing blade and get a new one. That's the benefit of using these safety razors. It's a 7-8 cents solution.

Merkur (sp?) razor. Works fine. A little short, I may look for something with a different angle at some point, but still extremely happy with it.

Switching to old school is a no brainer for me. Better shave, far cheaper.

Fwiw, I had zoned in on the Merkur myself, and ended up with the Van der Hagen because it was in front of me at a store, and cheap. The Merkur is a better razor, but I'm fine with what I have.

I use some shave oil before lathering up with the Bigelow cream but I’m still not sure it actually does anything. I need to try it with just the oil as it would be so much easier. I toss my Voskhod blades after two uses so a nickel a shave on the blades. Works for me. My razor is a Viking Chieftan Jr. and it’s pretty short but I’ve gotten used to it. It’s all about getting the right angle.

Edit: I meant to add that I can’t get up under my nose with the double edge razor but I couldn’t with the 4 or 5 blades either. I just buy a bag of twin blade disposables once a year so I can get that spot.

Trader Joes has this shaving lotion (vs foam) that I really like. It's mango-honey scented so if you're not into fruity-smelling stuff it may not be for you--I gave a tube of it to my brother-in-law and it wasn't for him. But it's not overpowering and doesn't stay with you all day, so I don't have a problem with it.

What I ended up with as my solution is to finish shaving and now worry about it, apply the Nivea post shave balm lotion, let it soak in a little, and then take my old three head Norelco electric shaver to that area.

Works like a charm, although it's disappointing it's needed as an extra step. Only takes a few seconds, though.

The balm makes it glide a little, but it does gum up the blades and it needs cleaning frequently, though. I don't do it every time, as most of the time I'm OK with the chin not being perfect.

I struggled with the area under my nose for a while until I watched a video on YouTube with a guy shaving and he did that. It kind of scared me, and to be honest, I cut myself under the nose the first time I did it, but over time it became very easy to do and I no longer nick myself when I do it. I can go right up to the very end of the nose that way.

Hmmm might have to try that. I did try shaving with just the oil and it was very smooth. I like to shave in the shower though so take it with a grain of salt. BTW Darrell, I also use the Nivea, great stuff and it only takes a very small amount. I like that it’s pretty much unscented too.

I use a razor my wife bought me for Christmas in 1989. I used Trac 2 cartridges. I have over the years thought about getting a new one but have not found anything that has the heft this one has. Have thought about going the safety razor route but am convinced I will kill myself with it. :)

I have a boar hair brush. This is the second one I have had since the one my wife bought in 1989 when she bought the razor (it was our first Christmas after I got out of Grad School and the first time we had any money). She got both (brush, razor) from Taylor of Old Bond Street in London.

I've used various shaving creams over the years, but the one I have used most is the Sandlewood from Taylor.

I just purchased a new shaving soap product from Lush that I am liking a lot. They had one that I tried but there was no foam. This one works very well.
