View Full Version : Survival game--play here

Elimination (or Survival) game: Its that time again so lets get started. Each week you pick ONE SEC team to win. Its that simple. There are no points, no spreads. Just pick the winner. HOWEVER in the following weeks you can not re-use a team. So if you pick FL to win in week 1 then you can not use FL in week 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 etc. If you pick Alabama in week 2 you can not use FL or Bama in weeks 3 or 4 or 5 or 6. Note that you are not required to pick intraconference games so you can pick UK to beat Western, but you can't pick Western to beat UK as your pick must be an SEC school. If the team you pick loses then you get a strike. Three strikes and you are out of the game. This game requires you to play from week one (and if you miss a week you get an automatic strike) or take a strike. The last person standing wins. As we get later in the year I might modify the game a bit to get to a single overall winner but fear not, after about 5 weeks it gets hard and by week 10 I don't expect too many to be surviving. We may do a redux midway thru the year if we get lots of folks flunking out early.

I've been contemplating rule changes for next year. Thinking about a DOUBLE PLAY week where you have to pick two hence you have 14 picks in 13 weeks. But I think I'll do it at players option meaning you can pick what week you double play.

Any other suggestions, now is the time to make them.

Doc, I meant to play the "Undefeated Elimination Game" this year, and didn't get ready in time. Especially if we have a reasonable amount of players playing--less than 25-30--it would not be hard to monitor. I will try to remember next year; I think it would be a cool sideline to the SEC Survivor Game.

For SEC Survivor--maybe 2 strikes and you're out, rather than 3? As somebody that missed the first week, I like the fact that one miss won't eliminate you :). But maybe two is enough?

Just throwing this out for discussion--what about requiring 20 picks in 13 weeks, and keeping 2 or 3 misses as "in it?" Choosing 20 would require picking teams twice, of course, but maybe having to pick 6 teams a 2nd time (limit picking a team twice, total) would mix things up a little. But I don't think I'd make it the player's choice--I think I'd make it like, "every other week" a two-team pick would be required. Or maybe the first week, and then every 3rd week thereafter. Or something like that. I think it would be fun to have the "double play" weeks in play; could really mess you up.

Also, I really like your rule change idea for next year. Although it seems like we get one or two weeks a year where every team is playing a conference game. You could be extra cruel and designate that your double play week. Cruel, but it seems like we get too many people rolling from week to week, barring weird circumstances (thanks South Alabama).

Alternatively, you might think about limiting the number of FCS opponents you can use, just like bowl eligibility. Maybe even having a minimum number of conference opponents to be eligible to win.

I like that idea, too. I mostly have looked for creampuff games; but it really gets the juices flowing if you have to pick an SEC v SEC game. Even if it is a bottom half type SEC team, you know there's a chance they'll knock off a team in the upper half. Maybe too much of a chance :).

Doc has a lot of options to play with....

Last year I think was also 3 strikes. Should start to lose more players here soon. Keep in mind, we are half way thru the season. Those in at the end will do the bowl thing like last year to determine the winner.

Some didn't like the "double play" last year so I dumped it. I did like it though, so considered putting it back. I also like the idea that you have to pick every school at least once hence you need one double play week.

I thought about restricting it to SEC vs SEC games. Seems like S. Carolina vs Northwestern La State Institute of Fabric Design is too easy a pick to get rid of you S. C. choice. The only problem is that early in the year there might not be a week where there are any SEC vs SEC games.

Just recapped the year. If we did SEC vs SEC only

Week 1 would have had 2 games to pick (MS vs FL and SC vs VU)
Week 2 would have had 2 games to pick (UK vs FL and SC vs MSU)
Week 3 would have had 5 games
week 4 would have had 5 games

So that seems reasonable. Plan on next year being SEC vs SEC games only. If it turns out there are no SEC vs SEC games, we will cross that bridge at the time.

Maybe just FBS games then? You'd still unload most of your schedule on creampuffs, but they might not be as... creamy? Boy, that doesn't sound right.

SalsaKat

Woof. Tennessee should be the surefire bet but man, they are having some trying times. While that's good for us, potentially, next week it makes it tougher this week. My other pick would be Ole Miss but they're not exactly lighting it up and neither one affects future weeks for me so it's a tough call.

I'm going to go Tennessee, but I'mma hafta pray on it and maybe come back and change it if the spirit moves me.

SalsaKat

Also, Doc, I had another thought: what if we were required to make our picks according to real-world scheduling principles? Like, you may pick a maximum of 5 non-SEC games (since we're playing 13 weeks instead of 12) and a maximum of 1 FCS game. Once you've played your FCS pick you are not allowed another, and once you've played your 5 out-of-conference games you may only pick SEC games from there on. Of course the rule of not reusing teams would apply as well.

Of course, I realize that might be too much to manage, keeping track of that for every player, but I think it would be a fun balance of difficulty as well as forcing everyone to think ahead. And it wouldn't run into the problem of weeks where there are no SEC games, or only one or two where everyone would be forced to make the same picks.

It would be difficult but not impossible. Maybe limit the out of conference to the first couple weeks but then I like the idea of people having to take a risk here and there. I think double plays are going to be in, whether it players choice or one designated week is to be determined.

Only lost KINGCAT with his third strike.

NOW TO THE TIE-BREAKER:
same as last year. You need to pick the SEC winners of bowl games in order of most confident of a win to least confident. You have as many misses as strikes available so for example I have one strike meaning I have 2 available. I stay in until I miss 2 SEC bowl winners. But because we have so many in the tie breaker, we need a tie breaker tie breaker........ After EACH GAME, place the number of points you believe the SEC team will win by. Who ever is out in the latest round and is closest to the total number of points the SEC won by in your games will be the winner. The prediction points for games you pick incorrect will NOT be counted. So if you have one strike and predict a win by 5 points in each game, but incorrectly pick the second and fourth game, you are out in the fourth round and your win margin was 10 (5 pts game 1 and 5 pts in game 3). If game 1 was a 7 point SEC victory and game 3 was a 3 point victory, you nailed it and would be the victor if nobody made it to round 5. Make sense???
