I've seen ads for FreedomPop, a provider who gives 500mb for free. So I went to frys electronics and bought a Mifi for $139 and have used it for 3 months.
I must confess its a pretty good deal. If you live in a 4G area it's completely free. If you live in a 3G area its $3.99 a month. It works and works very well.
If it has taught me anything, I've learned to control my data use on my phone :)
