Son will be in a soccer camp in Orlando til 5:30-6, and he hasn't been to the Atlantic Ocean, so thought I would try to get an hour of daylight or so there if possible. Any good public beach address or directions?

I would head for Daytona Beach. Depending on traffic is is 1 hour to an hour and 20 minutes away. One has to buy a permit to do so, but you can still drive on the beach there. Kind a cool. Mileage to Cocoa beach is almost exactly the same from Orlando as is Daytona Beach

Having posted that, it might make a big difference in travel time if one is staying south of Orlando as one would have to slog all the way across Orlando on the way to Daytona. I have no experience in the Cocoa Beach area

I'd vsit the newly renovated Boardwalk Amusement area at daytona. Nice active area. A quieter area where you can park free is Frank Rendon Park Or even quieter (free) Winterhaven park. the latter is described as the best kept secret in Daytona by locals.

I thought Cocoa beach was pretty when we went there many, many years ago, but there had been an oil spill and the beaches had black globs coming ashore.

Yes, Cocoa is the closest and an easy trip. We avoid the toll road and take 50 to 520. Takes you right to cocoa just sooth of the space center. Its a 40 min drive from UCF

Also, if you see the green goo on the internet or facebook, that is way sooth of cocoa. Its lake Okeechobee discharge which is Stuart, and flows south.

Not to hijack the thread. But is Daytona still nice? We went there every year as a kid for probably 15 years. I've not been since I was probably 20 years old. Used to a lot of people went there from Muhlenberg, but I don't know of anyone that goes there now and I've heard it has went down hill? And I've heard it is nice north of the Boardwalk but not south?

Anyone know?

Stopped for a night there last year and my daughter was impressed with the improvements made over the last few years. It seemed just as nice as thirty five years ago to me, around the boardwalk area at least.

Better, as a matter of fact.

You are right about the north end being "better" than the south end. Was there 2 years ago and we spent almost all of our limited time north.

A day at Cocoa is a lot more relaxing than a day at Disney.

You skipped Disney and the beach and went to a casino. So smart.

Was 113 heat index outside while I was melting watching soccer (fields are on hotel property). I came in and collapsed in the hotel lobby. They probably figured I could use it. They were right.

I got my sister and brother in law coming down at the end of the month for 2 days @ Universal. This coming week I have to go up and do some renovation and move in on a condo we bought in Orlando for our son. Those 4 days should be murder. As hot as it is, I hope hear strike isn't in the future
