This one did. We shot near her place which was about an hour plus drive for me. She had changed her hair style from the pictures I'd seen, shaved around the sides and back, had started her makeup when we arrived and asked me if she should do both eyes or just one. I chose just one. I mean, what the heck. She brought the props as well. The only wardrobe was a white dress and a fur coat. It had a sort of Game of Thrones feel for me but I just really went with the flow.

Normally when I shoot with a model for the first time, especially one who is not well established, I suggest they bring three or four wardrobe changes and select a location that provides a variety of backdrops. Experienced models I give more deference but discuss more in generalities and go along with any specifics with what they want/need for their own portfolios. As one who is relatively new to the whole thing it's all good for me. My main concern is that I'm getting experience and honing my photography skills.

If I had my way all the models I work with would be experienced because I don't have to tell them what to do, i.e. pose, expression, hold. New models will not change expression or pose without specific instruction and they have zero self awareness, even though I tell them to practice in front of the mirror so they have some idea of what works and what doesn't. It's gets a little frustrating to constantly tell them to move, change expression, etc. over a two hour period. I recommend fake eyelashes for most because you want the eyes to "pop" more than anything.

As for forms, I give models co-ownership with the only requirement being I get credit as the photographer. I've yet to shoot with anyone under 18 but that that would definitely require a consent form from a guardian as well as their presence at the shoot. I've had numerous requests for these and I just don't go there. I would for a friend who is a parent but that's it.

The only studio shoot I've had was with the Asian model above. I rented the studio for $25/hour for two hours. The model (who is in the video a page or two back) was very professional and we developed a nice rhythm (pose/expression-click, different expression-click). I wanted to capture her curves without showing anything you wouldn't see in PG-13 i.e. no nips or vagina and she managed to do that for two hours without a lot of repetition.

It was one of my first shoots and I was still learning my camera. I had it set on 'auto' which means it focused on whatever was closest to the camera in the frame. As a result in many of the shots her face was slightly blurred. Also, I had yet to purchase a flash and even though the studio provided excellent lighting equipment the shots could have used some light coming from the front. I overcame a lot of that in post production (editing) but not all of it. The model had a great sense of humor.

This will look better if you click on it a time or two.

Because of preponderance of dark, grey, and lack of color in the original, I decided to go B&W. The flesh tones were a little grainy so I smoothed it out. The result was a strong contrast between the model and her surroundings.

I've revisited this shoot and edited some shots I'd previously neglected so I'll be posting more of these soon. I thought this one was a great find.

I haven't had a shoot in a year and a half. I keep going back to old stuff and pulling out some hidden gems. That's what's on this page. The B&W above was from one of my first shoots 3 or 4 years ago. I blew it up by cropping it and made it B&W and increased the highlight.

I don't have any conscious criteria, just hunches. I think typically if there's a vast amount of light, neutral color in the background, it's worth checking out.

It was a bit chilly out and had planned to do some swimwear shots but it had started to sprinkle. She wasn't really experienced but took direction pretty well. You're right about the legs and the rest was model worthy as well, but a lot of repetitive expression and posing. All in all, it went pretty good. I think we'll shoot again soon.

Nope, but after I did a search I can see a resemblance. Thanks, Pap, I think I'm more talented at covering up my mistakes. I had all sorts of problems with lighting on this shoot, probably because I was out of practice and hadn't tinkered with the camera in months. This shoot seems to be getting some exposure in the surrounding modeling community and I'm getting interest expressed from a few sources again so I hope I'll be honing my skills again soon. This one wants to shoot again within a week weather permitting. Figures things are warming up now that the weather is getting cold. :533:

This is one of her best pictures though if I may offer a slight critique. The airbrushing is a bit heavy handed, its likely a personal taste thing. The compositions and what not though is QUITE good. Excellent lighting, framing, etc. I say this as if I'm somehow good at this. I know what looks good but that's the easy part. I don't take pictures of ANYONE well, let alone as good as you. My friends refuse to let me take their pics at parties because I have a knack for making them look their absolute worst. I'm the antithesis of a good people photographer. Nature and city scapes on the other hand I love doing though I just use my cellphone. I often get good enough results from it though.

I agree with you from a pure photography POV. I offered a less edited version to her and she complained that it made her legs look like they had cellulite. Most of the models I work with aren't really models in the commercial sense, but want the experience and something to show for it. Here's a B&W I'd done along the same line as the one above. I was going for more emotion, as though she'd either been stood up or abandoned: 2934 This model does quite well at car and bike shows as well as bikini modeling but probably can't relate to being stood up.
