The figures reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012 there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures
This means that the ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996

The new data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, was issued quietly on the internet, without any media fanfare, and, until today, it has not been reported.

This stands in sharp contrast to the release of the previous figures six months ago, which went only to the end of 2010 – a very warm year.

Ending the data then means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased.

No shock to me. No dought that mankind was seriously mishandling our resources and pollution a major problem a few decades ago. Mankind needs to act responsibly and believe that lesson learned. I still don't hold onto the global warming stuff but do see huge advances in air, water and land pollutionr

What? You mean yet another "fact" of science and perception isn't real? Next you'll tell me the Earth isn't held up by a turtle and 4 elephants.

The hallmark of science is to know what you have is a hypothesis or a theory, not a "truth". Does the Earth get warmer and colder? Well yeah we seem to have sufficient evidence of that part, but we have nothing more than theories as to why it does it and what contributes the most or the least.

The rush to presume we were destroying our planet, in decades no less if the original theories were to be believed, was nothing more than the latest Malthusian zero sum scenario. Robert Thomas Malthus projected in the early 1800s that food supply was increasing linearly and population exponentially which would lead to a massive starvation. That's a simplification, Malthus himself wasn't so dire, but "Malthusian economics" came to be the idea that it may even be better to have some smaller wars and starvation to prevent a much larger one later.

It was the beginning of the Doomsayers, who are convinced it's all going to end due to some act of man. If you were around in the 70s one of the most popular was species extinction. Paul and Ann Ehrlich were prominent proponents. The destruction of the ozone was another biggie.

Well species extinction isn't something we want, but now you never hear about it. The ozone fixed itself despite the "scientists" saying any damage was irreparable so we had to stop everything immediately. Ever hear about how good the ozone layer is doing?

The 80s was deforestation. the 90s and 00s have been global warming. Doesn't take long to see the big picture: some people have a psychological need to see man destroying his habitat in some way that will eventually doom man. Sort of a Planet of the Apes view of global ecology.

Global warming is more a creation of the environmental movement which is intent on ending the use of fossil fuels, the word then gleefully spread by the media. You can also follow the money. How many 100s of millions did Obama give to green companies many owned by his donors and bundlers and political allies?

I have no doubt the temperature of the planet fluctuates, and like Doc I sure want to see us reduce pollution of all kinds. that's an inherently good thing, but that alone doesn't create the sense of urgency necessary to get people to change quickly, so we have to have some doomsday scenario to get people to change. Species extinction from pollution, the ozone from pollution, deforestation from Western consumption. See the pattern?

The sun is the 8 million pound gorilla in the room. The scale of it is beyond our imagination. The energy it puts out is so much larger than anything we do that a 0.0005% change in what it does is massive to us. That's why we get ice ages and warming periods. Within that we have numerous other influences that create not a simple single wave patterns but numerous wave patterns from all these influences that overlap and cancel each other out and amplify each other.

No doubt we're one of those curves, but there are so many it's nearly impossible to make predictions like those absurdly made that the Earth will warm linearly based on 10 years of data and we'll all be doomed in 20-30 years. That's so bad it's not even science.

The original projections were Malthusian. They presumed food supply would only advance as it always had without accounting for the technological era. Likewise global warming "scientists" created their hockey stick projections based on the sun, the oceans, the tectonic plates and a bunch of other stuff all being held constant, including their reactions that may stabilize the system. Then when that wasn't good enough we now have evidence they cooked the books to make it dire enough to implement policy change.

In truth we know we need to reduce pollution, that's an inherent good, but we have no idea if we're heading for a warming cycle or another ice age, nor do we know when one might happen.

Please, the man who invented the Internet surely wasn't wrong about this as well.

We have gone thru huge cycles over the history of this old earth and we might be in one now or just came out of one. Had a geologist tell me the rotation of the earth and sun changes over time with the earth and sun being closer and then being a little further apart which causes the earth to go thru a slight warmer trend and then a slight cooling trend. he made more sense to me than Gore, which wouldn't take much.

There never has been any real irrefutable evidence of climate change, only of climate variability.
