Starting next year, you won't have to have an HBO subscription with your TV provider to access HBO programming. HBO announces plan to offer standalone streaming service:

I have to wonder if standalone ESPN and other cable channels won't be too far behind.

I also wonder if cable/satellite/Uverse providers might try to block use of their bandwidth to access those standalone services.

Brave New World, and all that.

CBS announced today it's not only starting a standalone service, but it's available now.

Apparently not all shows are available (e.g., you can't watch Thursday night football on it), and a lot of shows that were once free on their website are now behind the paywall. So there's good and bad.

Think about the monthly fees for the channels you want. It's going to be expensive, too. Not sure this is the way to go, but I'm glad to see more choice.

Pretty impressive. Going to mean a lot to a lot of very deserving people when this becomes a more widespread treatment.
