The Kurds are a good people, a people who have been persecuted for centuries and fought to stay true to their beliefs and have never been aggressors or suppressors of their own people. They are about to be overrun and if they are they will summarily killed. Men, women, children, all of them.
Baghdad is about to be massed against, and will be overrun under the current approach. The Iraqi government will fall to lunatics who can legitimately be compared to the Nazis or the killing fields of Pol Pot.
We can stop what will be one of the historic genocides in history, but it will take more than half effort and golf outings. It will take the guts to do as americans have done since our earliest days, it will take living up to our promises and obligations to set things right.
The Kurds have done nothing but work with the US and support us in that region, and like so many others our political will blows away like a leaf in the wind and we leave our allies hanging, to suffer for our conceit.
For God's sake, and I invoke His name not as a curse but as a plea, do what must be done to save these people. We helped lead them down this road, and now we will let it be lined with the heads of their children. If there is a God surely he will damn those who allow such a series of events to happen, and it will be richly deserved.
If we do not this could very well join the ranks of the killing fields, the rape of Nanking, the Nazi ghettos, Stalin's purges, as a great travesty of mankind. We can stop it, and we won't, and I am ashamed as an American for what we are going to allow to pass.
