I've had people bring in live coral snake, and ask me if they were coral snakes

or if it was a scarlet kingsnake

and have it get away in the office

I caught a coral snake when I lived in FL. ended up looking really good on a black Stetson

I enlarged the pic as much as I could without losing all definition. It appears that the snake has a thin pointed tail, and for the head, unless the officer crushed the head from the sides, it is a Rat snake

The problem with most of the identifications people suggest is that to get close enough to use them you're pretty much toast if it's a venomous snake. Shape of pupils, the scales on the underbelly, if they have fangs. I'd rather ID the venomous ones from 6 or 10 feet if possible.

Red touches yellow, kills a fellow. Red touches black, friend of Jack.

I've never heard that phrase but I'll remember it. Personally I can't stand the damn things.

Keep in mind that ID phrase is for coral snake identification vs. the similar rat/king snake

Here's another one.

"Slither on the ground, stay away.
Heads toward you, make some hay."

That's mine. Unless I have a big stick.

Here's mine:

"Blam! Blam! blam! blam! OK, let's see if enough of it is left to figure out if it was venomous or not."

(Not really btw, garter snakes and such I just shoo on off the driveway or whatever. They eat vermin so I'm good with them.)

If they do not have fangs and do not crawl in bed with me at night, I am good with them. If they sneak up on me and startle me then it is every man for themselves, but in general they are not my enemy.

I agree Rat snake. Given the length of the snake a cottonmouth would also have a much bigger girth.
