View Full Version : Chicago gun violence continues, despite ban on guns...

Over the 4th holiday, dozens were wounded, at least 9 dead from gun violence. Chicago has the most restrictive gun laws in the country, and while the 7th Circuit ruled the state HAD to allow some kind of concealed carry, it has yet to be passed. In fact it's supposed to be done by the 9th.

Yet the Governor claimed this kind of violence is why he vetoed the carry bill that was supported with broad bipartisan support. He made several changes and sent it back, and now says he did so b/c of this kind of violence.

Gov. Pat Quinn said Sunday that such continued violence underscores why he dramatically altered a gun bill that will end Illinois' last-in-the nation ban on carrying concealed firearms -- a prohibition that's been declared unconstitutional by a federal appeals court.

"That ought to be an alarm bell to all of us that we need strong laws that protect the public safety, especially when it comes to guns," the Chicago Democrat told reporters after speaking at a church on the city's West Side. "It's time to end the violence."

So his solution to yet another weekend of massive gun violence in a city where handguns are currently illegal to have in public is to..... argue for keeping handguns illegal in public. They need "strong laws"????? Prior to the SCOTUS MacDonald decision handguns were completely illegal in Chicago, yet there was violence. He wants to ban "assault weapons" despite the fact that no one is being killed by them in all this violence (it's 98% handguns, half are revolvers which is on no ban list at all), and wants to restrict legal carry b/c that will somehow help stop the obviously high level of illegal carry.

It's bizarre to read this stuff. Either he's a) a complete idiot who can't perform basic logic, or b) he's just playing to the anti-gun base. I'm going with "B", as he has to know that banning AR-15s is as irrelevant to the violence over the weekend as banning pancakes. Neither were used in or in any way connected to any of the shootings.

FWIW if you really want to know what's going on in Chicago, look no further than the HORRID educational system in those areas and the complete lack of jobs. The areas are so economically depressed gangs and drugs are the only escape, and the violence is a reflection of the high crime, the drug wars, and a general sense of hopelessness and lack of value for anyone's life, esp. their own. The place is an economic and educational disaster, and the violence (with or without guns) is a function of the mess they've created.

Not that this carry bill will help a lot of them. Even as submitted to the Governor it excluded carry on buses and such, making sure people who relied on public transportation would still be limited. Well that plus the $150 fee, 16 hours of class time, and the fact that it probably includes a shooting component and gun ranges are illegal in Chicago, so they will have to leave the city just to take the class. I don't think these "leaders" give a rat's backside about the people trapped in the Chicago projects. Just keep them dumb, hopeless, addicted and voting for the right people. Oh, and unarmed.

it's really sad. If they gave a damn they'd break the school union there and issue vouchers, make it all but free to hire people and open businesses, and gleefully hand out carry permits to the law abiding people just trying to survive in that war zone. Oh, and maybe arrest some people here and there, but we all know that kind of structural crime only survives if City Hall is in on the deal, just like with Capone.

How is that possible? Isn't it illegal for gun violence to occur?

Reminds me of what Jack Nicholson's Joker said about Gotham City, "Decent people shouldn't live here. They'd be happier someplace else."
