I would go to a big box hardware store and ask this question, but I'm at Walmart getting a tire replaced and shopping. I have just to shingles need to be text dale, but I do not know what size or type to get and whether I can use a common nail or not.

So far I have found Band Aids, headphones, and a magnetic wristband to hold nails and other items. Walmart may be cheaper on the tire, but they make it up with the rest of the crap I buy.

Shingles use a specific nail called a "roofing nail". It is short, 1" is typical, galvanized to retard rusting and has a large nail head to keep from going through the shingle, more than a centimeter in diameter.

Ask for roofing nails and you're good. You can also get them in copper, though that's usually used for copper flashing and roofing systems. The ones you want are just galvanized, look silver b/c of it.
